can you use onboard sound card to capture audio?

Yes, you should be able to. Provided, of course it has a line-in jack. Onboard sound cards are well known for their limited quality. Test it and see (record using the onboard card and test playback on that system and on another system with a separate sound card.) I say to test playback on another system, because you could potentially get a good quality recording, but the onboard sound card may play it back in a lesser quality. If the frequency range sounds good and the recorded volume is acceptable then use it, otherwise consider a separate, quality sound card.
