I have just recently upgraded my capture setup. My most important upgrade (I think) has been the purchas of a Digital8 Camera (TRV-740). I have been working with the passthrough feature and it seems that I can only capture at a res of 352x240. At least that is the native resolution during playback with WMP. Could someone clue me in as to how to capture at DVD res. For information I have been using Pinnacle Studio 8 DV. Computer specs below:

    Chip: 2400+ AMD
    MB: MSI K7N2G
    Bundled Pinnacle Firewire card
    200GB Western Digital Harddrive.

    Any help is appreciated.

Are you sure it's capturing at the resolution or just playing back that way? By default windows media player plays DV at half resolution.

That is interesting. I did not realize that WMP displays DV at half resolution. This could be my problem. Is there any program out there that will give the specs of a video file (ie resolution, bitrate, codec, etc)? Thanks for the help!

depending on your versio of windows, you have a variation of details available if you right click your .AVI file and press properties. This should at least tell you the resolution of the file.

flaninacupboard: Thanks for the information, I should have known that . It turns out that my capture was indeed at the proper resolution.

  6. Get "GSpot" from the tools section of this site. Open the file in question in Gspot and it will tell you what you want to know.

Uh, that should be quarter resolution, not half resolution.

that depends on your perspective. 352X240 is Half height and Half width. it could logically be called half. and the DV decoders list 352X240 as half resolution and 180X120 as quarter.

  9. You are right, it depends on your prospective. I was coming at it from the prospective of elementary arithmetic. 1/2 vert x 1/2 horz =1/4 total. A popular DVD standard, Half D1, could not be explained by the WMP logic. It is half of the horizontal resolution with full vertical resolution. Thus it makes sense to call it HALF D1. I suspect the root of this error is Microsoft itself. They've shown before that they could benefit from a little simple fifth grade arithmetic. So, we can blame them for "dumbing-down" the world if you want to insist on calling something of one quarter the area as 'half.'

  10. Yeah, this was driving me crazy too. I just bought a TRV-33, and the captured AVIs showed 360x240 (in WMP) no matter what I captured them with, same as vids I got with my brother's older camcorder. Finally got the Adaptec DV codec installed and opened them in VDub and saw 720x480 (or 704x480, whatever). Kind of a relief, I was starting to wonder what the point of a larger CCD/res was if they all dumped at 360x240. I'll try gspot to see what it *really* is.
