Hi!
I recently bought a Pioneer DVD A05-R/RW.
Along with it, I bought a few Optodisc RW dvd's, but they don't seem to work at all with the drive (Illegal media type error). The drive itself works since I can use the blanks that came with the burner flawlessly.
Should Optodiscs not be working on this drive?
Anyways, on to the more important question.
I'd like to buy a spindle of blank DVD-R's, but I'm not sure what brand to buy. I don't want to buy a spindle of 100 discs only to find out that they won't work with my new burner.
What brands do you guys KNOW will work with this A05 burner, and what speeds are they capable of? (1x is fine, but 2x or 4x is dandy.)
Thanks in advance.

I own a Pioneer AO5 too, and the only DVD-RW brand I have tried is Princo. I have 2 Princo DVD-RW's I test stuff with and both have burned and erased fine.
I have used many different brands of DVD-R. Mostly I burn Princo 2x, and out many hundreds of disks I have burned, only one disk gave me that same error you got when burning.
It sounds like you just got a bad disk there.
BTW, the only Optodisc (DVD-RW) I tried burned fine.
There is 1.30 firmware available for your drive now, so you might want to upgrade to that and see if that helps. -

You have to be very carefull when buying bulk DVD-R's online cause you cant inspect before you buy.
I've learned the hard way after being burned buying online. (No Returns, No Guarentee, They Work they say "yeah B.S.")
Anyways buy local so if they don't work you can return them and not be stuck with a stack of defective coasters.
CompUSA, BestBuy, Staples all seem to run good sales on DVD-R discs from time to time.
Verbatim, Fuji Film, Maxell, Apple, Sony branded media are good. -
I also have the pioneer 105. I have always used Ritek based discs. For a long while it was Ritek G3 discs - i mostly used traxdata 1x discs. These play perfectly in every player ive tried (and ive tried them in at least 15), and ive never had a coaster.
Now i am using 4x Traxdata discs (which are Ritek G4 discs). These also work perfectly in every player ive tried, and again ive not yet burnt a coaster. 4x writing is sweet - a disc in 15 mins!!!
Basically, I cannot recommend any ritek based disc enough. I believe Traxdata are owned by Ritek.
The only downside is they arent the cheapest dvd-r out there. Im in the UK, the 4x discs are £1.88 each at the mo (from SVP - www.blankdiscshop.co.uk).
As regards to -rw, i have some princo based ones at the mo. They have always written/erased perfectly, but they dont play in many of the players i have tried. Im gonna try some traxdata (ritek) ones soon. -
Thanks for the replies everyone.
Yes, I've upgraded the firmware to 1.30 pretty much first thing after installing the drive, but the optodiscs don't seem to work.
I've been looking around at the prices at local stores for DVD-R's...
I've found Princo dvd's to be a decent price (at 1x anyway), so if I buy this kind (or the 2x or 4x princos), it should work with my A05 for sure right?
thanks. -

You can try the Princo, ive heard horror stories, but heh if they dont work out you should be able to return them local (return as Defective Media). Depending on where you buy them there may be a restocking fee. (Check their return policy) -
From what I've heard on these forums Princos are pretty shitty media. Ive gone through about 500 Riteks so far and all work perfectly. Someone also just made a new firmware for the 105 that burns Ritek G03s at 2x. Upgraded yesterday and works great. If your looking for cheap reliable media go with the Riteks, you won't be disapointed. And now you can do them in about 30 mins. Just a though, like androidsdungeon2002 said can't recommend Riteks enough. Good luck in whatever you decide though.

If I were I would stay away from Princo you might have data loss later on theyll be unplayable if that happens, go with riteks its the best for the money.

Hi,
I bought a spindle of 25 K-Hypermedia at Office Max, they burn fine at 2x and so far work great, retailing for $49.99 for 25. Is a good deal for 2x disks.
