  1. I'm trying to figure out what settings to use when converting a captured AVI (13 Gb) via my FireWire card. I'm using a Sony D8 camera as source, and I'm using M$ Moviemaker to capture the movie (I'm told it makes no difference as it is raw data...?).

My priority is quality and I'm using 6000 avg 2000 min 9000 max, VBR 5 passes.
Should I use Upper field first...? I'm a bit confused.... How about Low pass filter?

I always use Type2 AVI, and i've never had any issues with anything.
I assume then that these are files -shot- on a DV camera, or is it just being used as passthrough? if it's shot on the camera, then it is bottom field first, if it's passthrough from VHS cable etc, you want top field first.
MS Movei maker should be fine, i've never used it, i use an app called DVapp, free and comes with a preview.
not sure what/where the low pass filter is, but it shouldn't be neccesary. the only thing i can reccomend is the CCE noise reduction filter, set to about 8 does a nice job. DVD Spec allows mpeg to be up to 9800 KBPS if you're using compressed sound, so use it, and drop the minimum value to 500kbps, no sense wasting bits on a black screen.
