  1. got some files here, most of them mpegs, that have a 'damaged' audio channel (for the lack of a better word)... one of the audio channels is showing pops and plops, which i would like to get rid off...

normal approach would be to export the wav, load it into some sort of sound editor and try to denoise and remix left and right... any suggestions on the best program / approach for this?

I don't think there is any good freeware program that'll do this (If there is I would really like to know). I use Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge and a Noise Reduction plug-in for it to clean up my vinyl recodings and it works very well at reducing pops and clicks and other artifacts. The problem is is that Sound Forge costs about $350US and the plug-in another $280US, but I think that you can use that the plug-in for the cheaper Cool-Edit. Cool-Edit should work just as well as Sound Forge, but I've never had any experience with it. Cool-Edit also offers an audio clean up plug-in, but again i've never used it.

Here are the links to the products' websites:

I cant' say its the best around, and I know alot of people here aren't fond of the Magix programs but I've been using Magix ACLab 3.0 with great success....

I picked it up at BestBuy when I was in a rush for a solution for a not so expensive price....(I think $40) ... and it does its job...

  5. i have been trying:

    - acoustica (relatively cheap)
    - goldwave (not that expansive either, but takes a bit to get used to)
    - cool edit pro 1.2 (an oldy, trial, but works)

but... often i have to pin point the problems myself, i would like to have a filter / plugin in 'fire and forget' mode

I'd recommend downloading a demo of ACLab then from Magix.
It has a wizard mode that you can select and area of the audio and 'test' it, basically walking through the series of filters for 'cleaning' that it has.

I believe you can duplicate a channel and then save back out to wav.. I know if ACLab can't do that you can at least do that as part of Audacity (freeware)...

I was hoping to find a filter solution for things I was doing as well, but didn't find anything that cleaned up the pops/clicks in vinyl that I was getting time and time again... (not to mention it does a really good job at tape hiss and tape noise on the audio track)
