I was just trying to convert a DVD to VCD using cladDVD XP and TMPGEnc. I can't believe it is going to take 6-8 hours to convert to an MPEG(excuse me if the terminology is wrong). Are there faster programs I can purchase online? I could actually MAKE a movie quicker than that!
Ripping to my hard drive took hardly any time and I wish the rest of the process wasn't so laborious.
Thanks,
Glenn G.

The problem is your 500Mhz CPU. Encoding MPEGs is VERY CPU heavy. I have an AMD 2200+ and it takes me ~0.7x source runtime per pass to encode with CCE (ie. a 120min movie takes ~84min).
CCE is much faster than TMPGenc, there's a new CCE basic verison that just came out for IIRC ~$58. Another choice is Main Concept. But truthfully it's your CPU.
