  1. I was thinking about the different authoring tools out there for creating SVCD images. Nero, I-Author, VCDxBuild, etc. Is there actually any difference, in as far as the SVCD itself is concerned, between using any of these tools, or are they all just a means of getting an MPEG2 file burned to disc?

An authoring tool is not anything about getting the mpeg to disc. That's the task for CDRDAO, Nero et al. Authoring is about setting chapters, creating menus and stuff, and possibly creating the directory layout. Different authoring tools allow you to do different things in different ways, while (hopefylly) keeping within what is defined in the standard.

  3. Ok, well then assuming I'm comparing creating an SVCD image with I-Author or VCDxBuilder or Nero, where I'm only concerned with getting the video to play - not creating menus / chapters etc. Is there any difference between them?

I use VCDEasy only, after some bad experiences with Nero, while taking my first stumbling steps in this business. No VCD I created with Nero played in my stand alone. Then in desperation tried VCDEasy, and haven't made a coaster since.
I haven't had the occation (nor reason) to try I-Author and VCDxBuilder.

  5. i have used both vcdeasy and tscv for burning and same as above i havent burnt a coaster yet.
tscv is like vcdeasy but some what more complicated but easy enough to get thru. and play on a norcent dp-300
like above i found nero to be finiky sometimes with burning svcd/vcd

althought you said your not interested in menu and chapter both vcdeasy and tscv allow you to do chapters/menus/and burn in one program with minimal effort on your part. i cant see why someone wouldnt put chapters in as its a pain to fast forward thru half the movie if you have to stop the film in mid point for some reason. all it takes is the click of two buttons once the file is loaded. chapters > chapter every ____ mins. and your done
