  3. Hi Baldrick. Thanks for replying. I meant converting the xvid or SVCD back to dvd so I can watch it on my tv's dvd player and not on my computer. I realize I can watch SVCD's on my DVD player but it's a hassle with multiple cd's. I just want to know what would produce the better quality to go back to DVD, xvid or svcd.

    Thanks Again

  4. xvid.

I've seen xvid videos that are very close to DVD quality. the same can't be said for SVCD.

Me too. I have also seen xvid/divx videos that look worse than worn out VHS tapes.

If you have a choice of downloading the same movie in xvid/divx format or SVCD and overall filesizes are similiar, I would generally go for the xvid/divx version. If the xvid is significantly smaller though (less than 1/2 the size) then go for the SVCD version.

This doesn't guarntee the best quality but I find it is a decent rule of thumb.

It's not the codec used, XviD or SVCD, it's the encoder. A 1 CDR backup of a 2 hour movie in XviD is going to look like crap, or be in low resolution. Along the same lines, a 4 disk SVCD can look bad in CBR as well.

The key is the qulaity of the encode!

  7. Most DVD players do not support XVID. So you would not be able to watch it using your dvd player on your tv, unless you have the KISS DVD/MPEG4 player. Other than that, I really don't see you have much choice, you'd have to convert it to cvd, svcd, or vcd.

  9. well if its all ready svcd you won't have to do any encoding. just maybe have to split them up if its to big to fit on one cd. as for xvid seem to come out better but sometimes are a pain in the butt to convert ot mpeg 2.

  10. Quick question...which conversion takes the overall longest time convert?

    SVCD to DVD?
    or
    XVID to DVD?

  11. SVCD can technically be merged together and burned directly as a DVD, as far as I know.

Both are mpeg2, and both have similar mpeg2-compliant resolutions.

XViD would need to be converted out to SVCD/DVD, then burned.

That said, I'm pretty sure SVCD can be placed directly as a DVD on a DVD-R.

  12. xvid is avi and svcd is mpeg 2 basicly all you need to change is the audio for a svcd but unlike a xvid you will have to covert the audio and video.

No it can't. SVCD resolution is 480*480/576 (NTSC/PAL). This is not a valid resolution for DVD. There are ways of persuading many DVD authoring programs to accept SVCD video and use it to create a DVD-video but it is not strictly within spec and may not play properly, or at all on some DVD players. Even then you will need to change tha audio to 48Khz.

Not much difference from my experience.

  14. i guess i got lucky with my dvd player as long as it has 48000 kps audio and the video is in mpeg 1 or 2 it will play on a dvd. as with svcds and vcds it will play no matter what it is if i put it on a cd. basicly what i am saying if it is mpeg it will play on my dvd player.
