I don't know of any useable players capable of playing RM files, but I hate Real Media too, and I use "RM Converter" (http://www.boilsoft.com/) to simply convert the damned RM file to anything I like.

Most of the time I use XviD, 1-pass quality just for a good mix of simplicity and quality.

The converter app will convert the RM audio into PCM audio (WAV) so you can go back and use VirtualDub or whatever to strip this out, compress it to whatever format you like in order to shrink the ultimate file size further, again, I prefer Ogg Vorbis because of it's ease of use and quality, also, both XviD and Vorbis are open-source, another bonus.
