I seriously doubt that it has anything to do with copyright protection. More than likely it is in your setup. Recheck your audio set up. I'll bet a wire was "crossed" or not put where it is suppose to be.

I have found several times that while using Virtualdub my line in (Control Panel/Sounds/Audio - Record Volumn) gets switched off!! It seems each time I reboot it defaults to off. (Using XP Professional)

Also check to make sure line in isn't muted as well. I spent almost half an hour wondering who I couldnt get any sound even though speaker's on and volume's all the way up. Didn't occur to me to check the sound control panel for line in setting.

Hi Mello & All,
I have exactly the same problem as you did and am wondering if you have solved it. If you do, could you tell me how?
I tried to capture Hi8 video using digital camcorder's pass-through funtion. I use Videostudio 6. The video was captured fine, but no sound at all.
Interestingly, I could capture video AND sound just fine when I capture from the miniDV tape in the digital camcorder itself. This makes me think that the problem might not have anything to do with the audio setup on my PC. Instead, it was caused by some special setting for pass-through capture in VideoStudio. But so far I have not been able to find a solution. So if you have an answer, please help!
Thanks. -
WWML,
I don't have a camcorder anymore (died) but I'm thinking if you can output to your tv from your camcorder and get sound then outputting to your capture card will also render sound. Be sure the "Line In" recording control (Control Panel/Sounds/Audio/Sound Recording - Volume - Line In) is checked. Try capturing with Virtualdub or MyDVD or other capture software to see if VideoStudio might be the problem. Be sure you are inputting to the blue "Line In" and not the red "Microphone" plug on your sound card also."No freeman shall be debarred the use of arms." - THOMAS JEFFERSON .. 1776 -
Thanks Gritz. Line-in was selected, but still no sound. My Hi8 connects to miniDV via S-video; miniDV connects to PC using 1394 link. So there's no line into sound card. Does anyone know if S-video can transfer sound over? Or, is it just for video?

Svideo only transfers video no sound need to find a way to hook up the sound into your line in on your sound card.

Any suggestion on how to get the sound over? Here's what I have:
1. Hi8 has an AV port
2. miniDV has an AV port as well
3. Can I connect the 2 AV ports with one cable so that both the sound and video can be passed over? (I've never seen an AV-to-AV cable. What I have is an AV connector on one end and RED/WHIYE/YELLOW connectors on the other hand. Obviously this cable is useless) . Or
4. Can I do the following:
a. linking Hi8 to miniDV using S-video to transfer video signal
b. linking miniDV to PC using 1394 port
c. linking Hi8 to PC sound card using the AV port on Hi8 and the line-in port on PC. What kind of cable should I use for this?
Thanks! -
I've transfered anolog 8 to my digitial 8. Here is what I do to use the digitial 8 as a pass thru. I put the anolog 8 tape in the anolog camera. hook up the red/white/yellow end of the av cable to the camera. Hook up the other end of the av cable (which is a 1/8 male plug with 3 sections) to the digitial 8 and the digitial 8 to the pc via firewire. If your set about using s video for your video, you need to see what kind of audio out the hi8 has and yes hook it to your line in on your sound card to get your sound in. Or find out how to pass thru your sound to the digital cam as well. What brand and model # of camrea's are you using. I could go to the weeb sites, check them out and maybegive you a better suggestion. One other thing is how does you dgitial recommend to transfer video to it from a hi8 or anolog 8 camera? If you hook it up in this manner, then the digitial to the pc with firewire your sound should be there.
Good Luck. -
Thanks cdcox for your help.
My Hi8 is Canon ES7000v and it does not have the three Red/Yellow/White a/v out ports. Instead, it only has one A/V out port that can take a 1/8 3-section male plug av cable. In addition, it has an S-video port.
My miniDV is a Sahrp VL-AU1X. It has an AV port, an S-video port and a 1394 port. According to Sharp's manual, I am supposed to hook up Hi8 and miniDV using an AV cable with R/Y/W plugs one one end (going into Hi8) and 1/8 male plug on the other end (going into miniDV). But, since my Hi8 doesn't have the three ports for R/Y/W plugs, I can't follow this method.
Anyhow, I need help to find out the following:
1. Is it possible to hook Hi8 and miniDV via their respective AV port using an AV cable that has one single 1/8 male plug on both ends?
2. Is it possible to transfer the sound by hooking the Hi8 directly to the sound card on the pc using a cable with 1/8 3-section plug on one end and a plug that can go in to the line-in port on the other end.
Either way, looks like I need to go out to search for a cable that has 1/8 plug in on both ends. Am I right?
Thanks. -
ok check at radio shack for an av cable with 3 sec 1/8 plug at both ends and maybe ask them if they know if all camera's follow some standard on av cable so you know the audio and video will match up at both ends on the 2 different camera's. OR take your s video to your dv and your av cable from your hi8 to your sound card. Try this, get a "Y" splitter so you can hook the red and white rca jacks and bring them down to 1 1/8 stero plug to connect to your line in on your sound card. I think this would work but I'm not 100% sure. Let me know meanwhile I'll lokk up your camera's on their website to see if I could help some other way.
Goodluck -
didn't have much luck on the canon web site. I have a Sony digitial 8 so I have the same cable you do, however on sony's site they do offer an av cable with 2, 3sec 1/8 plugs at each end. I would assume (but you know what can happen) that canon would also offer one as well.
happy hunting -
OK, my report ...
I couldn't find an AV cable with 1/8 3-section male plug on both ends. So I went to Radioshack and bought this coupler:
I then connected two regular RCA cables with 1/8 plug on one end and R/Y/W plugs on the other end using this coupler. I was able to transfer both video and sound by linking the two AV ports on Hi8 and miniDV. I also remember reading somewhere about S-video transferring better video than regular AV cables. So now I transfer video using S-video and sound using the method described above.
Thanks for all the help.
