I was just wondering if there is a way to play burned VCD's on a Playstation 2 without any extra hardware? Thanks

  2. I don't think so, PS2 has no VCD support at all. You'd need something extra to run them.

Hitachi (if you find the right one, I forget which model it is), Curtis Mathes CMD5000, Sanyo DWM-370, JVC VX65, and some Apex DVD players.

  9. @hotskillz.....sorry if everybody is not so well-informed as you are about ps2 specs......were you dropped at birth and mad at the world or something, and feel the need to take it out on others, or display your superiority? if you are tired of saying that they don't play on ps2, then keep your mouth shut. You probably think you are so damn smart, but I know for a fact you are a bit dopey. Anyone intelligent would not act in the manner that you display at a reasonable question like Lethal has asked. So tell me, do you know EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING? The only stupid question is the one not asked, but i gues you already knew that too.

  12. Ok heres the deal on the PS2, NO, It doesn't support VCD, I know because I own a PS2 and have tested them on it and they wouldn't play. I called Sony Playstation 1-800-345-7669 and talked to tech support and the dude told me that it intentionally didn't add VCD support because in order to do that the PS2 would have to support CD-R and RW disks, thus making it possible to play psx and ps2 backups without the need for a mod chip. I personaly dont realy see the revelance of this since the ps2 could just be programmed to play VCD and not psx format, 2 different formats after all.

  13. I don't own a PS2, but to me, the real question is, can the unit be mod-chipped to play vcd and/or backups of games? or is it the lens that prevents cdr/w reading?

  14. Try this site. It has software to supposedly make a ps2 compatible vcd. I say supposedly because I haven't tested it ( I don't own a ps2). And I dont know if it will read the cdr or cdrw either. If anybody finds out post here and let me know.

  16. A key point to note is that the drive in the PS2s werent built everyday use of continous spin that a VCD needs....it was meant purely as a game console, & OCCASIONAL DVD use...the PS2 disks dont spin constantly during play...while a DVD & VCD does...and they have several reports of severe premature drive failure due to above & beyond intended use of the PS2 for video viewing....now you ask, well why advertise this?, as purely a marketing ploy to get you to buy...because they figure that majority of the time it was for a young adult's room where most FAMILY(ie. constant use) dvd viewing but more importantly VCD viewing was not going to take place....so in a nutshell, if you do get the VCD mod to work, accept the high risk of drive failure.

  17. I have a GE 5803P and it can play VCD, SVCD, MP3, CD-R, and CD-RW and KARAOKE discs. I think it can play XVCD too (not sure). Not only that, but there is an Apex hack on the internet that lets you "update" the firmware to Apex so you can disable macrovision, css, etc. I highly reccomend it -- plus it has a 3-disc carousel ^_^

Its a great player. Its made my Shinco which also makes the Apex703. And it can also handle miniDVD. You made a great choice. Congrats.

Chris X: That tech support guy is a complete moron, most are. It has absolutely nothing to do with the media that the files are on. The PS2 does support cdrs, otherwise audio cds wouldnt play. Also if it didnt support cdrs then there would be no need for sony's very advanced method of software protection, which undoubtedly cost them millions of dollars to perfect.

low_iq_88: There are numerous mods for both the psx and PS2 to get them to play backup games. Like I said it has nothing to do with the media or the laser. Original games have bad sectors on them which are impossible to duplicate on comercial burners. The console checks for these bad sectors and refuses to play the disk if they are not present. Mod chips, game enhancers using a disk swap, or a boot disk (psx only NOT for PS2)bypass this sector check one way or another.

There is currently no way to play vcds on the PS2. This is because the software to play vcds simply does not exist in the console. Its like trying to play a divx file without the divx codec installed. Eventually a hack or hardware adapter will come out.

DJmunkee: That software lets you convert an avi file to PSS which is the movie format that the PS2 uses. The quality is not very good and you cannot fit as much of the movie on each disk. Yes you have to have a mod chip or other hack to boot the disk and to get the movie to play you either have to do some simple programming or you have to have a game enhancer that lets you load individual files.
