  2. I would have to say that you really would have to have very little quality expectations if you want to fit a bunch of episodes on a CD. I don't think this is the answer you probably want to hear but you best bet would be just to try stuff and see what works best for you.

It would also help if you clip out the commercials as well. You can figure about 8 minutes of commercials per half hour of recording to clip out.

I generally fit a 1 hour show/CD (that's roughly 44 minutes). You can use SVCD or VCD, it's up to you. CVD is very similiar to SVCD bitrate wise. If you want to fit 2 hours worth, dont' bother, it will look horrible.

What's the source, Capture card or DVD? It really, really matters (noisey capture drives the bitrate through the roof).

You can easily fit a 40-45 min series episode in one 800MB CD, using CVD as target format.
The bitrate is about 2100 - 2400 average, depanding the lenght of the episode.

If your player support -x- formats like xCVD, then you can succeed amazing results by going beyond CVD top bitrate standards. For example, 1000min, 2300 average, 3600 maximum, gonna give you prety good quality with 1/2 D1 (xCVD or 1/2 D1 DVD)
Unfortunatelly, this is -X- for and CD based format, but if your DVD standalone can handle it, it might be the best solution you have!
It is very good solution also, if you own a DVD-recorder. For most television stuff, the 1/2 D1 CCIR-601 framesize is the best solution IMHO.

Then all depend from the source.
CVD is good only if your source is good and with a framesize more than 352 X 576/480.
If your source is lower, then better make vcd (or xvcd). You gain nothing by going more!
