There are a couple of players on the market now the KISS player is one that springs to mind.
-
...but dont rely on it. It will be able to play DivX that you make to the players specs, but to hope for taking any DivX from the web, burn it to a CD and watch it on your telly is hoping for too much. There's simply too many variations of DivX. Just take a look at all kinds of problems people run into just trying to get the most configurable DivX player of all (the computer, that is) to play DivX. Save a wad of $s, and hook your telly to the computer if you don't want to convert to (S)VCD/DVD

The current KISS player will only play divx 3.11 movies.
Don't know if there any any updates out there.... -
On the contrary...it Will Not play 3.11
Q: What video codecs are supported by KiSS DP-450 ?
A: All video codecs that comply with the specifications of ISO-MPEG4 – Advanced, Simple Profile, are supported by the DP-450. DivX 4.x and 5.x comply with this standard, exept DivX 5.02 features- GMC (Global Motion Compensation) and QP (Quarter Pexel) which are Advanced, Advanced Profile features.Q: DP-450 is able to play DivX 4.x and 5.x, but what will happen when a new version of DivX is released? Is it possible to upgrade the software to support newer codecs ?
A: If a newer DivX codec is released, e.g. DivX 6.x, DP-450 will be able to play it if the codec is ISO-MPEG4 – Advanced, Simple Profile compliant. A codec needs to be made from the principles and specifications of ISO-MPEG4 Advanced, Simple Profile to function properly on the DP-450
This player is good if u know what you are doing -
I dont know if you would consiter my dvd playing DIVX but it does play 720 x 480 MPEGs
The dvd player is the Panasonic 32K

:P that should really be 350 euros (the same at the moment, but who knows how far the dollar will drop?).
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
hay bigmac,
I suppose that as long as YOU do the encoding to final divX and using
version 4x and above, you should be ok. I can't say for quality of play
becuase I do not have a divX stand-alone player.
I do know that jmc_uk (see above) owns one. And, he would prob
be the best person to talk to for advice. Be nice to him.
This player is good if u know what you are doing
You MUST know what you are doing, else you WONT be satisfied. I beleive
that for the most part, the final quality will be based on:
* the player's abilitye ie, quality etc.
* the USERS divX encoding skills.
Please note, if you are planning on buying one of these for strickly doing
D/L encodes, forget it. You'd deffinately be wasiting your monies - - am I
right on this jmc_uk ??
After all, re-encoding from another encode, and especially a divX one,
in most cases only proves worse quality than original divX source.
So, if you're going to encode to divX, you would be wise to use your OWN
source ie, DVD or capture from Satellite etc.
good luck bigmac.

If you want a DVD player that can play Divx you are better getting the Xbox and getting it chipped, it can play almost anything.
Or even better build a Shuttle PC http://us.shuttle.com/ and hook it up to your TV, you wont get better than that.

BarryHL is right. The Xbox with a Mod chip will play Divx and I think the Sega Dreamcast with a mod chip will play divx too.

I was thinking who cool it would be to add a processor somehow to a DVD player. hen you can load the needed codecs and the great players available and play everything perfectly. Eve after burning modifications.

Recently I installed an ATI All-In-Wonder card. Every AVI, mpeg, DVD, VCD etc etc plays perfectly. Records perfectly, too. The 80GB drive means I don't have a growing pile of discs and cases, but I still archive home video and other 'keepers' to disc.
HTPC, Home Theater PC, is a growing trend. The biggest drawback many people run into is purely the noise made by a PC.. You've never been so annoyed by a CPU fan in your life.

Last week I built a very small computer using a microATX motherboard and a tiny table top case with black anodized faceplate with drop down doors. It has a DVD drive and a Sony DRU500A drive plus two 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB cache hard drives. I only loaded win2000 pro and just the programs I need to backup DVD's. This system is dead quiet with a passive CPU cooler and a very low noise expensive power supply. All I can hear is the hard drives clicking away and the drives spinning.

About 3 months ago I asked a similar question, and I don't remember who it was, but someone posted a link for www.broadq.com
It is a program for the PS2 which plays all versions of Divx/Xvid, as well as mp3s and many other files. The software is constantly being updated, so newer codecs are not a problem.
You can get it from Amazon.com for about $50... the only down side: you must also have the network adaptor.
If you don't have a PS2, you could look at is as purchasing a Divx/DVD player for $300 (PS2 + network adaptor + broadq software). It most definitely is the best thing I've EVER purchased for my PS2.
