Well I've umm backed up (heh) about 100 dvds mostly using dvd decrypter with my Liteon 163, then DVD2ONE, imgtools and then DvdDecrypter to burn to my DRU-500a (1.0f). A few exceptions are original DVD-5 discs (read ISO, write ISO) and one of my early ones I stripped the vobs and repacked em with IFOedit (PAIN IN THE ASS)...plus it didn't work until I imaged it with imgtools and reburned it instead of trying to go thru Nero. Also for episode discs I use dvd decrypter and rip ALL the files and then use Pinnacle Instant Copy to go through (better quality and easier than trying to mess with D2O)
Well I thought I had it pretty pat for the most part, but for the first time in months I had a couple issues. First was Beauty and the Beast. This disc ripped fine, I used PIC to burn and the result was very noticeable degradation in quality combined with angle issues. The original has 3 difft endings and so I think it has a bunch of 'common' chapters for all the difft endings and then it uses difft end chapters. Plus there is also difft angles built in, but these I'm not sure how they come into play on the original. (But on the copy u can switch back and forth from angle 1 to 2 and it goes from regular animation to like showing u what preproduction must have looked like for that scene) The original doesnt let u switch angle (tho it shows there is an extra angle) without going thru some other menu. Strange. I'll probly just trash my disc and then back up only the original theatrical ending which should keep the quality up and not have to worry about incorrect menus / angles.
(I thought PIC was supposed to keep EVERYTHING intact and just transcode video???)
Also Star Trek 2 wouldnt rip on my Liteon! It would do everything but then get stuck on one of the vob files (said there was a read error). The disc was perfectly clean tho, so I tried ripping it on my DRU and lo and behold...no problems!! ??
Not really any questions, but just kinda strange seeing this happen. What other problems have you guys run into that I should be on the look out for? What are some easy workarounds? I've found that PIC isn't THAT great if the original is gonna be > 6.5 + GB since the quality loss is usu noticeable (not sure about on a tv standing some feet back, but it was VERY noticeable on my monitor) Are most episode discs packed to the brim??
