  1. I was just reading a post by BJ_M regarding flashing a standalone player. I am curious how someone would go about flashing a standalone player that COULD be flashed? Do you somehow connect the standalone to your videocard and download software or is "flashing" a standalone, more like a "HACK" where you just change some codes within the DVD Player itself or via the remote? If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. Thanks in advance

I have done one upgrade on a DVD player. It involved burning a couple of files onto a CD-R (or RW) and putting it in the player. In my case a menu came up, I pressed play and away it went.

Yes, that's the method for my player too (Centrum Libra=SEG Hollywood II and many others) - burn the upgrade to CD-R(W), put it in the tray, and the player recognizes it as an upgrade disc. Press play, and pray that a fuse doesn't blow during flashing...

  4. thank you both for the reply. That is definitely interesting! That is something I had NEVER heard before. I was actually just assuming it was a "hack" but I couldn't understand why the word "flash" was used. Again, I've learned something new. Now i'm gonna check and see just for fun if there is a flash for my standalone. Although I probably wouldn't use it because I have no problems with anything now. Thanks for the info.

Some firmware can be burnt on a cdr and simply "played" in the player, but others require you to remove the loader from the player and hook it up to your pc like a dvd-rom and then run the software.

Always be careful with firmware upgrades and never install it unless you have a particular reason to. Don't fix it if ain't broke.

  7. THANKS Adam and PuertoRican138, messing around with firmware for my Lite-On caused me all kinds of problems. Fortunately, after a days work, I was able to get my insane ripping speeds back up to 15.4x for DVD-5's, but it was hectic. I don't want to have the same problem with my standalone because it plays all of my burned disks flawlessly. I haven't or won't even check to see if their is a flash because It would probably not be a good idea to flash, even if there was an update. Like you said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
