Im a real big fan of WinAVI Video Converter & since finding it a couple of years back rarely use anything else to encode\author DVDs. Great quality output and blinding speed.

Version 10 & 10.1 haven't been so good to me though and Im back on v8.
The problem Im getting with v10 & 10.1 is that if I build say a 12 title DVD it only outputs 9 titles, the others are left as temp files and unfinished which make the DVD unplayable as its menu is all screwed up. Tried various options to fix this, even changed my codecs to KLite full. Still doesnt solve the problem.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

  2. Have you contacted tech support, sounds like a bug in the program.

  5. If version 8 does the trick, stick with it. Was there some advantages switching to 10? Sometimes version upgrades just turn a good product into bloatware, think Nero, MS Office...

I came across Aimersoft DVD Creator a while ago, but it can't import video straight off DVD. As far as I know, only TDA does that. They also have Aimersoft DVD Studio Pack.

  6. WinAVI is OK for quick, dirty conversions but I'd find something better if you're looking for quality in your authored DVDs.

Dont know why WinAVI is being rubbished tbh. Fantastic app imo and Ive had great results from it. I also use TMPGEnc Authoring Works which is great on .vobs but too damn slow with any other format. This is where WinAVI shines. Its sub handling is good via Vobsub aswell. Dont get me wrong if you put crap quality in youre gonna get crap quality out. I wouldnt use WinAVI for encoding raw material to say AVI/DivX etc, but for spitting out DVDs to view on a standalone DVD player/TV it works great.

Tried Aimersoft DVD. Not really for me tbh so uninstalled.

    Thanks anyway.

    What do you use/recommend?

Must be fast (1 hr for a 2hr DVD)
Needs good sub handling (ability to alter fonts, placement and outline render)
Good import of file types inc. vobs

If I could shit code, WinAVI would be one of the first things that formed in the toilet.
I don't think it gets any more bottom-feeder than WinAVI.
It has a long history of being nothing more than low-grade spamware.

If you're going to buy a program, then buy a good one: ConvertXToDVD

Thanks lordsmurf. ConvertXToDVD. Tested the trial this afternoon and Im impressed. I love the way it handles dual audio and subs with little effort. It actually produces a PROPER DVD with selectable audio and sub streams. To do this in WinAVI means making separate DVDs. Anyway, a very nice piece of software and def going on my wants list.
