I have some type-1 avi files.
I tried to import them into VirtualDub and, of course, it complained about needing a VFW codec and type-2 avi files. So, I installed the Canopus codec. This, from what I understand, is a VFW codec that understands type-1 and type-2. However, VirtualDub still complains about needing a VFW codec. Did the codec just not install properly or am I missing something here?

I don't use VirtualDub so I don't know what it requires but try the Canopus DV File Converter to convert from Type 1 to Type 2 or the other way around. There's another converter under the tools section. I don't know who makes that one.

  3. Install a different vfw codec. The Canopus DV codec only gets used if you convert the file to a Canopus DV file. But rather than going through this conversion, you are better off just installing the Panasonic DV codec.

Thanks, I'll try the panasonic one.

This type-1, type-2 dv format is confusing.

From what I understand, in Avisynth you can load using

AviSource() --- which requires you to use type-2 files, right?
However, it seems that audio sync problems are more prevalent in type-2 avi files.

Maybe I don't understand by why don't people load the avi file with the DirectShowSource() command, which doesn't care about type-1 or type-2.

Is it just a stand against microsoft?
