I've got some rare import Playstation games that I would like to back up. Do I have to have a 'raw' cd burner, or since my games are 5 years old, would I just be able to burn like normal with clone cd? or do I have to rip it to my pc, then burn?

Kronos - do your backed up games play in a playstation 2 without a boot cd or mod chip?

Use clonyXL download at http:/people.freenet.de.bexxxxj
and clone CD together. It remove the encription etc and launches clone CD to copy and burn. It will be necessary to install both. I made copies to my grandson and it ran fine.
big t already say this but I confirm that it works and also inform where get clonyXL

That site didn't work, could you email it to me? ( kyle_burr12@hotmail.com ), so no mod chip or anything? just put the burned cd into a console and it'll play? thanks
navarrow - I'm not sure. I think you have to buy a box to plug into the back of your psx

RE: VCD for PSX, yes, you need an attachment for the back.

So if i download clony XL and burn a copy of a game i will be able to run the backuped game on my psx without a mod-chip or a boot cd?
Did i get t right?? -
No a copied playstation game will not play on a playstation without a modchip, game enhancer, or boot disk. The same goes for the PS2, regardless of whether your playing a copied PS2 game or a copied psx game. Clone cd can bypass additional software protection, such as antimod programming, but it is impossible to make an exact copy of a psx or PS2 game using commercial burners. That is why you will always need a mod chip or similar device, or in some cases a swap trick.
To play vcds in the psx you need a hardware adapter, they cost around $40-$50.
You cannot download and burn a boot disk. The only reason the boot disk, called the ps-x-changer, works is because it contains the same sectors in it that original psx games use. If you could burn a copy of the boot disk then you could just burn a copy of the game itself, which defeats the purpose of having a boot disk.
nfl2k2: If your games are 5 years old they probably dont have any additional protection on them, of course it depends on where they are imported from. If from Asia then I doubt theres protection, if from the UK its possible. You could check gamecopy world and see if a patch for the game was ever released, if not then there is no protection. I am almost certain this is the case so just use cdrwin or any other regular burning program. Do a disk to disk copy and preferably tell it to make the image first, although its not necessary. You dont need to use clone cd unless there is additional protection. Of course you're still going to need a way to boot up the backup. There are a number of swapping techniques for the PS2, some that dont require a mod chip but these can potentially damage the console. Otherwise you will probably need to install a mod chip. -
But if i burn a copy of a psx game and burn the sub codes and everything it will be an exact copy of the original.
Will it work then if i do a precisly copy??
My cd burner is really expensive and it can burn everything with DAO PW Subs and the copy is an exact copy of the original. -
No like I said it is impossible to burn an exact copy of a psx or PS2 game using any commercial burner. It is because of the protection scheme that is used on playstation games.
All playstation games have a little dummy file on it. This file is located on the outer edges of the disk where most cdr-roms/burners cant read. You can see this file if you use a dvd-rom however. Anyway this little file has some sectors on them which are intentionally corrupted. These bad sectors are what the psx or PS2 console checks to determine whether the game is an original or not. It is impossible for commercial burners to burn these bad sectors because they automatically correct the errors before burning.
You can make a disk image of a psx game and it WILL be an exact copy, but when you burn it your burner will "fix" the protected sectors and make it unbootable without some sort of mod. -
thanks adam.. I still have a few more questions
1. I read on a site that the boot discs you download are fake and dont work, is this true? If it is not true, can you give me the link to download the boot disc you use so that I can make sure it will work?
2. Will this boot disc work for backed up ps2 games?
3. does it matter what I use to burn the boot disc with? I have nero, clone cd and cdrwin.
4. On clonyXL (just downloaded the newest version), how do I 'rip' the playstation image files to my HD from the game? It recognizes the psx disc fine (533mb). Or, do I open clone cd and clonyXl tells me what files to burn?
any help would be greatly appriciated -
There is no boot disk for the ps2, at least not yet. Even if you had one you would still need some sort of a modification to the console because it checks the disk everytime the tray is opened and closed again, rendering a boot disk useless. There is the old cog knife trick but I won't get into that.
Read my post above. A boot disk exists for the original playstation console. The manufacturers of the boot disk either got access to the hardware that game manufacturers have or they got a hold of some dev disks (blank cdr media with the bad sectors already burnt on them) or they found a way to emulate Sony's bad sector burning. Regardless there is no way for anyone else to burn these bad sectors so it is IMPOSSIBLE to burn yourself a copy. The image of the boot disk on the internet very well might be real but its useless because its impossible to burn. If you want a boot disk you have to BUY it, and it will only work on the original playstation console not the PS2.
Its been a while since I've used clonecd so I don't remember, sorry. But I seriously doubt those games have any protection at all, any imaging software will work just as well. -
Hy ... I did not reply to nfl2k2 because I was in travel last week, and I conect on internet only at weekend. sorry.
Let me explain that I am not a expert on this, only a user.
I think Adam understand a lot and I am happy to learn some additional things ... I enjoy. I am only using the softs and a procedure that a friend explained to me. I instaled both cloneCD and clonyXL on machine. First you start clonyXL and it shows a 5 small skulls. This means the difficult degree of remove the protection. On the games that I copied It shows 2 skulls after you scan the CD. Then you ask to make a clone, then the program invokes cloneCD ( it is necessary to inform the path where the program is ) and make the copy choosing CD to CD diretly. It will copy a image on HD and after burn the CDR. The copies that I made work fine on PSX. Maybe as Adam told, they are a old games for a young boys ( like my grandson )but I guarantee that it works fine.
Adam - you reply that would be necessary a hardware
adapter to play VCDs on PSX... ( 40 to 50$ ) Could you gently inform what kind and brand and etc ? ... thanks

ok, i'll try it. but, do they make a psx boot cd, that works for regular psx games that you can put into your ps2 and it will make the regular psx games work? I'm not sure if adam meant i wanted to play backed up ps2 games or not, just making sure.

There is no working non-swap mod for PS2 games however there are mods available for PS2 that will let you play PSX backups without a swap. The easiest one to get for someone who would only want to deal with a 'boot-disc' would be the Neo-Key which has only one wire to solder and the rest is done through the USB interface (I believe has passthrough on it to, so it doesnt use up the USB slot)
