sorry if any of this seems abit noobish, but ive not had my dvd writer that long, so this is all very new to me.
ok ! im having problems with my dvd-r`s freezing up part way thru a movie.
the programmes im using are smart ripper and primo dvd.
I use smart ripper to backup then primo to burn. At the moment im using
bulkpaq g3 (r2) dvd-r which im having trouble with, but ive also used a more expensive g4 dvd-r which also have the same problem when playing them back.
Ive tried the dvd`s on a freinds dvd player and its the same, and in some cases the dvd would not even play, which i think is another problem.
Also does the (r2) mean that only r2 can be written on that disc?
sorry if it all sounds abit stupid, ive put it the best i could.
If you need more info to help me out , just post and ill answer asap.

    thnx !! flippa

  2. the simple answer to your question is the problem definitely seems to be your media. Two things you can try are to burn at 1x, and if that doesn't work or you are already burning at the lowest speed, then get new media. The truth is that even expensive media can have this problem. I've experienced it first hand with Verbatim. The only other thing you can do is a search on the "media" portion of this forum and read up on popular successful media. I for one love ACCU, many others love Ritek. It's all about what works for you and you may have to test a few different brands of 5 or 10 packs before you decide on which one is best. Good Luck

  4. It's deffo the media.

My burner is a Ricoh DVD+R.

When I bought my burner I was using Datawrite +R and well over half of the disks skipped and froze on playback.

Now I use Traxdata DVD+R and FWS (Ritek) DVD+R and I haven't had a single problem in over 100 burns with these.

If you are UK based, try a sample pack from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk. You can then try a variety of makes at a reasonable price till u find one that works for you.

I've found this company to be reliable, prompt and cheap.

  5. There are some other issues that can cause DVDs to freeze up during playback; this freeze up will stop the picture and sound and/or cause blocks in the picture in rows or random.

First is the burn drive set to DMA or PIO. I use PIO only and have not had a burn issue since.

    Do you defrag regularly?
What program are you using? Nero right now seems to be the best.
Is your page file set to 1.5 that of your ram?
    Don't multitask while burning!
    Turn off your AV software!
Are you using a udf and joliet bridge and what version of udf are you using?

Also the laser in some set top players can damage a DVDR if it is a cheap brand.

  6. It can be easier... do you label your movies ?

    If "yes", DON'T !!

I (and others) had many problems with paper label .

  7. Is it really a problem of labels ? I wonder why, because I never heard about it.

I guess it's just the media, which gives this effect. Since I turned to use Panasonic-Medias, the problems disappeared.

  8. Labels would only cause a problem if the player was unable to turn the disk due to the label hanging it up. Other than that it would not.

I don't recommend using anykind of paper labels on disks that you want to keep around forever.

Actually they can also unbalance the disk making it hard to read. If the disk is barely cutting it then its enough to often put it over the line.

Moral: Labels just are not worth it.

yep, another vote for no labels,
used to make alot of vcd's but never labelled them, just used a marker pen and everyone played flawlessly. then i go and buy my pioneer 104 and make some nice shiny dvd backups, i get all excited about how great the quality is, decide to make nice covers for the box and beautiful labels for the disc and guess what....skip,block,freeze,audio jumps....tried different media and was allways the same.
don't get me wrong, it wasn't on everyone but enough to get up my nose

  11. I used to have that problem with labels on CD-R's and playing them in my car. The damn things would get stuck in the player itself, so the only way to remove it was to pull it out with needle nose pliers.

I like "dressing up" the DVD's. Until I get a problem with using labels, I'll keep 'em.

There are different thickness labels. I used the "transparent" labels (made by Neato) for dreamcast games cause they were almost paper thin. They also looked good over the Fuji media I was using. You could see the metallic areas through the label, so if you put it on straight, it looked pretty cool.

They look like shit though on my DVD's (Verbatim).

  12. We are getting off topic but maybe Yamaha will get into the DVD ring and create a DVD labeling system like they have on there new burners. I have one and have redone alot of my CDRs to incorportate there technique of label burning. It really is cool.

  13. I must be lucky.

I label my DVD's then burn them with the labels on whilst I surf the net and download stuff and print DVD covers all at the same time.

    No problems at all.

Eeek - to read the stuff above, I should be producing coasters by the thousand!!

yeh, i used to do the same and then test my disc by playing it for a second...yep it worked then i would quickly go through the chapters and yep everything was fine and then 3 months later i would decide to watch the film and lo and behold i would have glitches here and little annoying blocks there
after checking the media and doing a few other tedious experiments i decided to watch a movie without a label on and then watch the same disc with the label on( do you realise how boring it is to watch a film twice when all you are interested in is seeing if it works) and guess what, it froze.
so if you can do all these things while burning a disc and then watch it all the way through and everything is fine, then i am very envious
