  2. Extract the audio from the divx using virtualdub, direct stream copy mode. Fix the output file with ac3fix.exe if required. Convert to mp3 with HeadAc3he and re-multiplex with the video, again using virtualdub for this.

    Hope this helps.

Perhaps it may be simpler to use VitualDUB in a single go. Use the Modified VidtualDUB that reads MPEG, AC3, etc and open the original file. If the Video is as it should, perform direct stream copy for video and select full processing for audio. Select the codec for Audio as MP3 and write to a new file.

Video will be unaffected and audio will be decoded from AC3 and encoded into MP3 in a single go. Should be faster.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  7. The format of the WAV file that Virtual Dub saves the audio as depends on the selection on the Audio menu.

Direct Stream copy will extract the audio to exactly the same format as it's encoded within the video file. Regardless of the original audio format, the extracted audio file will always have the .WAV filetype.

Full Processing Mode with Compression set to PCM(No compression) will decode the audio to standard uncompressed WAV. This is where you'll need to have an AC3 codec installed on your pc.

Try both and look at the size of the WAV files it produces.

As for the Virtual Dub message No Decompressor Found - you need to install an AC3 capable audio codec.

Freeware from http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/ should work with Virtual Dub.

    HTH.

  9. Did you find the AC3 Filter Config shortcut and tweaks it's settings?

If you still have no luck try GSpot from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ GSpot will identify the audio codec's tag code.

Then try a search engine for

audio codec tag ???? (+download maybe?)

Are you using the standard VirtualDUB or the modified one that reads MPEG-2 streams and AC3 audio? The standard one will only accept WAV, MPEG-1 and MP3 audio. Only the modified VirtualDUB can decode AC3 audio, regardless of the existense of the AC3 codec.

If you can't find it in the tools section, try
    http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/
