DVD-VCD on DVD+R?

Pardon the newbie question but I am interested in ripping dvd's to my computer and converting them into dvd-vcd quality. My goal is to put multiple movies onto a dvd+r so they can be played on my stand alone dvd player or my pc. I am not interested in keeping any of the menus, special features, or other extras that come on a dvd all I would like to do is rip the main movie and convert it so it can be burnt on a dvd+r. I was wondering if someone out there could point me in a direction as to what programs and what guides I can use to perform this task. I would appreciate any information on this subject. thanx.
