I'm about to buy an emac superdrive and am very new to all this. Could anyone please give me step by step instructions of the easiest way to transfer a dvd movie to dvd r, i'm not that bothered about the extras on the disc but that would be nice.
Thanks.

I mostly only do exact copies - so they go onto 2 dvd-r and the program I use is DiscomVOBulator. (homepage.mac.com/kaicherry)
There are other methods out there for encoding to fit onto one dvd-r, but again i dont do that so I wouldnt be the best to reply. -
I don't often use a mac but my brother has one with a superdrive and we have backed-up many of my DVD's. There are actually are many DVD-5 dvd's out there and many good one's and those are no problem. Just use DVDBACKUP which you can search for (sorry I don't have link) or OSEX and use Roxio Taost to burn which you can search for. If the DVD is dual layer (DVD-9) and under 120 minutes you can put it on one disk you just have to take some stuff out. For example "Joe Dirt" I used DVDBACKUP to rip and deleted the Fullscreen version of the movie (it has both wide and full screen) and burnt it with Roxio and everything works great, keeping all the extras. You just have to get the disk down to size to fit. Another way which I found on this forum if the movie is dual layer (DVD-9) is to just rip the main movie if it's under 120 minutes and use "tocgen". You don't get all the special features but you get the main movie and sound. I haven't decreased the bit rate or changed the quality of movies or sound and don't plan too. If you have more questions reply and I can get some links, I'm kinda new to the MAC stuff but it seems to be working for me and this forum is great, read, read and read some more LOL.

I have 4 methods I use to do DVD to DVD-R. The reason for 4 is some are simpler than others and each strives to keep as much of the original DVD as possible. I realize some can do the same functions as others, but what I've been doing has worked well for me so I haven't changed my methods much.
For <4.7 DVD's I use FairUseImager in OS9. It images the DVD, then I burn the image with Toast. Super fast and easy.
For DVD's slightly over 4.7, I use DVD Back-up in OSX. Then I trash enough non-movie vobs to get it to fit on a DVD-R. This way you'll keep the menus, languages, subtitles, etc, and just lose whatever special features you throw away. Burn "DVD" with Toast.
If just the movie VOB's are >4.7, I rip the elementary streams with OSEX. Often times, the AC3 and M2V will now fit without the extra languages and subtitles. So, I run the m2v file thru MoreMissingTool's Bits Timecode and build the disc with DVD Studio Pro and burn "DVD" with Toast.
Lastly, if just the movie stream is more than 4.7, it will need downsampling and I'm undecided as to what's best. I gave up on 42 and now I just experiment with Ffmpegx and Minx. See Bonker's post- Thanks Bonker's.
Use VLC to view your movies cuz Quicktime doesn't work with large files. It was really fustrating finding out some of my "problems" were nothing at all. -
Here is what has worked the best for me for fitting a DVD9 to a DVD5, No menus just the movie but it is shit simple.
01 Rip the main track with DVD Extrtactor.
02 Use Minx Transcoder, setting= fit to DVD, DO NOT select ad pulldowns.
03 take the .M2V file that Transcoder reduced for you, and drop it on MPEG Telecine.
04 Take that resulting .M2V file plus the AC3 file and import it into DVD Studio Pro, build disk.
05 Burn the resulting VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders in Toast.
worked perfectly with TORSTORY2 and CASINO, if you like you can add your own menu and jump points in DVDSP.EarlyGrace -
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but you don't have to purchase the pricey MPEG Append program to telecine a M2V file. The PullDownX program (http://homepage.mac.com/rnc/.Public/PullDownX.sit) is 100% free and does the same thing. It's just a GUI front-end for a UNIX app by Brent Beyeler.
Just select your input file, output file, and leave all the boxes unchecked and set to 'disabled' and the program will insert 3:2 pulldown flags and DVD SP will accept the file.

When I tried pulldownx the sync was off, right after I tried Mpegtelecine and the sync was perfect.EarlyGrace -
My method is to used DVD Backup. If it fits on one disk fine but if it doesn't I remove the last couple VOB's of the movie and burn the first disk. Then I remove the first Vobs of the movie and replace them with the ones I removed earlier. Then rename them to the names of the first VOB's. Then burn the second one. Sounds like a lot of work but it keeps all the goods and works fine on most DVD's that are too big for one disk.

EarlyGrace,
I'm frustrated. I tried your method. I used transcoder first without the pulldowns ... tried it in DVDSP and it was noticeably running at a fast speed. I ran the .M2V through telecine and DVDSP wouldn't accept the end result. I then started over and used transcoder with the pulldowns and tried it in DVDSP and everything was out of sync. Now what? Any suggestions? The move is "Bourne Identity" -

I have access to the Bourn Identity so I will try it and let you knwo my results, hopfully before the end of the week. Sorry it did not work for you.EarlyGrace -
I don't know why DVDSP is not excepting it, I have not had this problem, what version are you using, I am using 1.0

Keep trying each version of minx transcoder but can never get it to work. Keeps giving error "filetype not M2V, MPV or MPG, or fileout = filein?
Any ideas to fix this would be mucho appreciendo
