Has anyone experienced a heavy CPU load when using the ATI MMC capture program? I'm to capture a Laserdisc at DVD resolution MPEG2 @ 3000kbps and the task manager shows 100% CPU load during capture - I have a 1.7G P4 with 512MB or ram. I thought I would be at least able to capture at that bit rate - the capture is worthless as the frames dropped during capture were huge. I even tried this with a fresh install of XP with nothing else installed other than the ATI driver and the 7.6MMC app and had the same results.

Another interesting observation was that just the application running, i.e. not capturing, the CPU load hovers around 30%... is this normal? I realize that most capture uncompressed and post process, but HD space is currently at a premium (temporary) - three days to capture and postprocess a two hour movie is a bit hard to swallow (I want to capture/convert my Starwars Trilogy LD to DVD as the LD play has been flaky recently).

    Thanks,
    Ted

  2. Try VirtualDub for capping... ATI stuff kind of blows...here are a few capping guides https://www.videohelp.com/capture

Doing it to Mpeg2 in the ATI software ain't gonna work. With the 128 pro, the only really acceptable capture results for stuff where picture quality matters are if you take it in UNCOMPRESSED in Virtualdub at 720x480 and then recompress with Tmpgenc or Mainconcept to a VBR multi-pass MPEG2.

Of course the uncompressed drop is gonna cost you 50 gigs per hour.

With your system you MIGHT be able to keep up in Vdub with the Huffy lossless codec. It will mean higher CPU usage and still might choke for you, so make sure you turn all background stuff off.
