    Hi there
I just bought this sony 500A and I was jus wandering if current owners of that one can tell me what software that came with the writer I should install. Also I would like to know what extra software I should install (dvdxcopy, dvd2one, dvd encrypter, imagewriter, ??. Furthermore, is there any teqnique better than the other copying DVD's both DVD5 and DVD9 (other than the guide here at vcdhelp.com). Are there any extra adjustments I have to make. Please tell me how it works best for you, as simple as possible.
p.s. I was told that bittsetter settings that works for HP200i does not work with the sony, Is that right that this setting adjustment makes your dvd's you write able to be played in any dvd player, even those who usually dont play written dvd's?
    Thanks

    upgrade firmware to 1.0f
    Sonic dvd
    RecordNow.

THE KEY TO MAKING DVD'S IS TO HAVE NOTHING RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND.

  3. Elvarb,

I've been using Nero for burning and erasing. The OEM software bundle is pretty much crap, the most functional (sort of) is Sonic MyDVD.

Definitely upgrade to the latest firmware (1.0f) making sure you disable DMA on the DRU500 before doing so. IMO I would only install one burning application, as certain components (Recordnow DLA, Nero INCD, and Adaptec DirectCD) can conflict.

I simply use the record now program to burn, it is simple and the results are better than any other program I haev used. Download dvddecrypter, ifoedit and buy dvd2one at once. This will allow you to be able to back up any movie no matter what the size. ALso, definately upgrade the firmware at once.

    Latest one is 1.0g

I use Nero 5.5.9.17.0, Updated RecordNw DX (only sometime), DVD Decrypter for ripping, IfoEdit to make backup of DVD's, Pinnacle Studio 8 for home video to DVD.

Planning to look to some data backup solution so I have installed Veritas somthin Backup.

  6. elvarb,
Spend some time reading/learning at this site and you'll find what you need.
    I have a DRU500a and I use:

DVD decrypter -> for DVD5 (4.7GB or less in size)

DVD Decrypter -> Rip movie only
    DVD2one -> transcode
Recordnow DX v4.6 (upgraded free online, v4.5 came with my burner) ->Burn

If you want to spend $100 bucks DVDXcopy will copy the entire original DVD to 1 or 2 discs depending on its' size and on what you want to keep as far as extras.

There are tools such as IFOedit, TMPGenc that are freeware, but you'll need
to find the right guides and be willing to spend alot of time learning/screwing up/ wasting
money on coasters etc etc It really depends on how much time, effort and money you want to spend backing up DVDs.

    Good luck !

I agree with that however when I upgraded to 1.0f or 1.0g my Sony no longer would burn DVD-R at 4x no matter what brand.
