i got a film that is english, but has a large amount of foreign lanugue in.
the orginal disc automaticly selected the required subtitle for this foreign lanugue.
i have ripped the right subtitle, but want to know what i can change so that this subtitle is always shown, with out the need to manual select on the remote
cheers

what have you ripped the subtitles with?
what do you intend using to author.

If an english movie has a large amount of foreign language voices, then while authoring, the "author" decides to mark certain english subtitles as "forced". This means that the subtitles for foreign speech are shown always, while the rest remain not shown.
If you select a different language subtitle stream, then the forced subtitles are not shown.
This is one way to have subtitles when you need them
The other approach is to author the DVD title in such a way that a certain subtitle stream (e.g. english) becomes visible "by default". You can turn it off afterwards, but on start-up they are visible. This can be done by appropriate selection of values for the SPRM 2 variable (current subpicture stream).
Most DVDs are authored in the first way.
The only authoring package I know of that allows such operations is Scenarist. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
