I am fairly new to video capture and I mostly capture from my satellite dish. I started out capturing in 352x240 but found I had a problem with every 4th and 5th frame being identical due to telecine and 3:2 pull down and only capturing half of the vertical resolution. I then started capturing at 352x480 and solved my problem using the filters in TMPGENC. However, I have been trying to capture some old cartoons from the 60's; Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, the Herculoids and I still have a problem. When I capture at 352x240 there are some frames that are identical, but not every 4th and 5th, it is more haphazard, so the video is not quite smooth. I have tried to capture at 352x480 and the capture jitters. Does anyone have a solution to correct the jitter ? I know this has to do with interlacing and telecine but I can't quite get it right for the cartoons. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance !!

  2. I assume you are capturing at 29.97fps (ie. the correct frame rate). Also what's your final encode: DivX, VCD, SVCD, DVD? You don't have to de-interlace unless it's DivX or VCD. MPEG2 (SVCD and DVD) support interlace source. Remember that it might look bad on your PC but will look/play fine on your TV (assuming MPEG2).

Deinterlacing cartoons is always a messy affair. Not sure if this helps

Hey thanks for the reponse !! I am capturing in order to create a VCD. I haven't actually tried writing to a VCD yet because I haven't captured enough. However, I will write what I have to a CDRW and see how it looks on the TV.

I didn't think I would have to de-interlace but I noticed that frames 4 and 5 of every 5 frames have interlacing artifacts so I have tried deinterlacing.

I will let you know how it works.

    Thanks again !!
