  1. Question...I'm trying to convert a DVD down to VCD, and the film is in 2.35:1, and well, how do I keep it in source aspect ratio with TMPGenc? There is no option for it, and I really want to keep it in OAR. How do I go about this?

    Hey there czTempe,

Well, you really don't have much of a choice here if you are sticking to the vcd standard.

Make sure that your output is set to 4x3 and that your input is set to 16:9 525 line for NTSC or 16:9 625 line for PAL ....

Your output will indeed retain its widescreen appearance but will in fact be encoded with black bars as VCD only officially supports 4:3.

  3. How do I do this...like I'm using SmartRipper to rip...and I already have the movie ripped, so should I rerip it, or what do I need to do in TMPGenc, like how do I need to set it up?

  5. I don't mean to be a pain, but since I'm not the most experienced person on this site, could you just point one out to me that could help? If you can, thanks a million!

  6. You have to run it thru dvd2avi first so tmpegnc will reconize it. then in tmpegnc select full screen keep aspect ratio. If you want to keep the movie original.

  7. Yeah...I did run it through DVD2AVI, but in TMPGenc, even when I set it up to those settings, it still is not correct. It still looks really distorted.

  8. After you save it to a d2v file out of dvd2avi, create an avisynth script and put this after ivtc or deinterlace
    bicubicresize(352,180,0.0,0.5)
    addborders(0,30,0,30)

    and open it in tmpg
    should work =\

    Under 'Advanced':
    - Source Aspect Ratio at 16:9
    - Video Arrange Method at Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio)
    Under 'Video':
    - Aspect Ratio at 4:3

Also do a 'Clip Frame' under 'Advanced' and clip off the black borders. You will still have borders but it will give you a better finish. You'll have nice new black borders as opposed to the old ones being re-encoded.

  10. ...or if you want to 'trick' your player and run an anamorphic picture to a widescreen TV (assuming you're using a widescreen TV), under Arrange mode choose Center Custom and, if the VCD you're creating is PAL set the size to 352x218 and if it's NTSC set the size to 352x182 then encode.

I've seen different opinions on compressing anamorphic pictures, but for me it's the only way to go. To create a letterboxed widescreen picture, then zoom in on this (16:9L on my TV) makes no sense as I'm only using a fraction of the resolution. Instead, I prefer to create an anamorphic picture (people look "tall n' skinny" on your PC screen) and then run my TV in wide mode (16:9) resulting in a much higher quality picture. And yes, I know encoding anamorphic eats up more bitrate than encoding the black bars, but I find the quality makes up for it.

    Just my 2 cents
