I recently bought a Sharp DV-RW2U which uses DVD-R & DVD-RW. (If you just need a basic recorder with no hard drive - you can get this one for $399 at pcmall.com or ecost.com) (I got tired of waiting for Pioneer, so I decided to try this one.)
Anyway, my question is: Can 2x DVD-RW discs be used safely on this machine. Obviously the machine only writes at 1x, but the 2x discs don't seem to cost any more than the 1x ones. I tried the 2x disc in the recorder and it seemed to accept it just fine for the short test I did. The warning on the back of the packaging says to use these discs only on 4x drives and using them on older/slower drives may cause permanent damage to both the drive and the disc. I don't know what kind of drive Sharp put in their machine - and I don't feel like lifting the lid to find out.
Anybody use 2x discs on any standalone and have problems with it![]()

I don't see why the 2x discs shouldn't work your standalone. I don't have a standalone recorder so I can't try this out. I think the stickers on DVD-RW's are because the discs are constantly being upgraded and are mainly just for pc drives so that people with older drives don't have problems when it comes to writing on the discs at 2x speed. But as you have a standalone it will probably only be 1x speed.
Basically if you can't find any info on this elsewhere and you feel confident in using your 2x DVD-RW's on your standalone, use them.
If you don't feel confident try find some 1x speed ones and use them.
You will probably have no probs with the 2x speed discs
Personally I would use whatever I thought would be best for the drive and will maintain the longest lifespan for the drive.
