I used Sonic MyDVD that came with my Sony DRU-500A Rewritable Drive to transfer video direct to a DVD+RW from a Sony digital video camera. This worked great, as I could immediately make a DVD and play it in any DVD player I have tried so far. What I need help doing is how do I edit out the parts of the DVD I don't want. I now have pinnacle Studio 8 to edit my newer home videos still on mini dv tapes but can anyone suggest an easy way to edit the existing DVDs?

Use a tool like DVD2AVI to extract the vob's (DVD files) to avi's, which can then be easily edited. Try a forum search for DVD2AVI and see what you come up with.

I wish I knew more about this- I've never had a need to do it myself, but I know that's what the tool is for. As a general rule, any time you convert there is an increased chance of quality loss (depending on codecs and such). But now that you've asked, I'm really interested myself. I'll see what I can dig up as far as guides go. If the program just extracts avi's from the vobs, then I don't think there will be any loss. If it actually has to convert them, then maybe there will be. I'll let you know what I find out if you are interested.
