    trying to convert avi to mpg/vcd using ulead video editor
    some avi movies work fine but others come out with the audio and video out of sink
    any suggestions welcome

    I've never tried Ulead video editor but with TMPGEnc I had a similar problem. The avi's I tried to convert were DivX films. Most could be converted no porblem but some had serious audiosync problems. Fortunately I figured out how to fix it:

    Open the DivX avi in VirtualDub. Select Audio -> Full processing mode and Audio -> Compression -> PCM wav.
    Select File -> Save wav.

    You can also save the video half of the film using video -> direct stream copy or enter the original DivX as the video source in you MPEG encoder together with the saved wav file.
