I would like to hear from those who have used both. Is CCE worth the cash? Are you using the "Lite" version? I plan to download the trial tonight.

    Thanks...

the lite version is not worth it ..

CCE is very very good .. but tmpgenc is a rare bargin that does almost as well and has a lot of good additional features .. another excellent choice is the MainConcept encoder which is priced between the two ..

best thing to do is get the demo's of all three and compare for yourself ...

this topic always ends up a huge debate ..

I agree with BJ_M this one always triggers a storm.

One comment, as more people move to DVD formats instead of VCD / SVCD, the absolute quality of the encoder becomes less important. The bigger frames and higher bit rates in my opinion are less demanding. A lot of debate came from trying to get maximum performance from more limited formats.

I figured it would be a hot topic. As a relative newbie, I'm still trying to get over the amount of time TMPGEnc takes to encode 2 hours of AVI into half-resolution DVD. That part has frestrated me a bit. Can you tell me, with respect to time to encode, is Main Concept more efficient?

I think there are some formalized comparisons if you do a search. It would probably end up TMPGENc -> MainConcept -> CCE going slowest to fastest.

I still don't have an issue with the speed. I assume you have found and use the batch system in TMPGENc. I typically have several files that I need to encode, I batch them then go to bed. By the time I get to the computer the next evening, everything is done.

To me (not to start an argument!) TMPGENc has an interface and features which are powerful yet fairly easy to understand. The value (price vs features) is outstanding.

i get fastest speed on Main Concept -- but it is optimised for P4 and dual cpu and/or hyperthreading ..

CCE is about a dead heat though ..

I have to agree about :

I seem to get much shorter encoding times with MainConcept than CCE and TMPGEnc on my AMD, sometimes as high as 1/3 realtime for VCD (30min video takes 10 mins) and faster than realtime for DVD.

Also the DVD variable bitrate mode is great as it only takes one pass where the others need at least two.

How does Canopus Procoder rate in that mix (speed and quality) ?
