DV capture in ScenalyzerLive

I just got the Canopus ADVC-50, and the video quality is excellent. There is a big difference between a BT8x8 card and the Canopus. The video is crisp and sharp, and not soft and blurred like the video captured with the BT8x8 cards.

However, there are not many capture applications for the DV video source. I have tried DVIO, but there is no preview screen, and no options for setting stop time. ScenalyzerLive has preview window, but it also have lots of other features I don't need (like analyzing and splitting the video). And most important of all, I cannot get the timer Stop to work. I want to start a capture, go to bed and have the program stop the capture after 3 hours (or any time I specify). I have tried the stop settings, but they don't work. It just keep recording until the hard drive is full.

So, is a a trick to get the stop setting to work, or is there another simple DV capture program that will show the video in a small preview windows and save the DV file to the hard drive. No need for bells and whistles, but it does need to have a Stop timer.

Thanks for the link. AMcap is perfect, I'll give it a try. Also, I'll see if I can download Moviemaker, it does not come bundled with Win2K.

Hay guys..

What about just creating a small TIMER app ??
Do yo know any programming languages that you can use, and just
send keystrokes to the DV app ??

This is just to get your juices going..



Of course, you could "extend" on this and add to this app, such features to
record (or save) key combinations, like, say in a file or something.
This way, your TIMER app can be used w/ other apps as well, and not just
for DVIO or whatever DV app you were hoping to make work.
However, I think that for this minor project, DVIO would be rediculously
EASIEST to complete !! I mean.. like, its only got TWO buttons, he, he..
How hard is that ?? So, go for it !!

Just a suggestion.

Anyhows.. Ain't the ADVC great !! he, he.. ..

I use IuVCR with my Canopus ADVC100, it has a scheduler as part of the program.

It looks like all WDM capture applications will capture DV video...
I guess even VirtualVCR will capture DV video.

Just a quick update, AMCAP will only capture DV type-1, not compatible with Windows Media Player, Vdub, and TMPGEnc (at least not on my PC). However, DVAPP works fine, it can capture both DV Type-1 and 2, has preview during capturing, and has a stop timer

I manage to get TMPGenc to recognize type 1 DV avi files. I believe that it is by setting the priority setting in TMPGEnc for directshow at a higher setting, for example, +4, you increase the chances of compatibility with type 1 DV files. The exact instructions to do this are the following:

In TMPGEnc, select:
Option >Environmental setting > VFAPI plug-in > Right click the "DirectShow Multi Media File Reader" > select higher priority, do this several times until its at the top with a value of 4.

DVApp is a nice program but it doesn't seem to work with the passthrough feature of my digital camcorder.

Edit: I was wrong it works with the passthrough feature if you press on the play button in DVAPP.

I don't have a camcorder, but use the Canopus ADVC-50. Even though the ADVC-50 is only an encoder, it seems like it is possible to stop it from encoding. First I thought it would start generating the DV stream as soon as you power it up, and it would not respond to any commands sent to it. But, it looks like it does respond to the Stop command. I have to hit the Record command to make it start sending a DV stream again.

For camcorders, you can send many commands, like play, FF, REW and so on. My guess is that you will need to send a command to put the camcorder into EE mode (loopthrough). I guess that DVAPP is just missing this button? But, can't you hit this button yourself on the camcorder?

About DV-1 type files, since it will not play correctly in Media Player, I don't want to use the DV type-1 format. Searching a 3 hour DV file takes forever in type-1 (if it works at all), but a DV type-2 file searches as fast as a regular AVI file. This is important to me when I'm looking for a 4 minute video clip in a 3 hour record

Nope, I'm not a programmer!

DVAPP is a MS DV capture application, just like AMCAP is for WDM captures. Go to the link in the 2nd or 3rd message in this thread, and you can find a link to download this small capture application. It basically have all the controls of a VCR (camcorder) where you can send or receive DV files between the PC and a DV device (camcorder).

I have no problem playing type 1 DV files with Media Player. However, I use Windows XP.

After playing with the program a bit more, I realized that DVAPP does work with the passthrough feature of my digital camcorder but I had to press on the play button of the DVAPP software for it to work.

P.S. skittelsen, there is no special button on the camcorder for the passtthrough feature to work on my Sony digital camcorder. If there is no tape in the digital camcorder, the passthrough will work.
