    Hi
    I don't have a DVD writer.
I make VCD and SVCD with good quality.
    My concern is............
How compatible these formats are for the future??
Do people think DVD players will support VCD?SVCD for many years?
If not (I expect because DVDs and writers will come down in price) then will I be able to convert my VCD/SVCD to DVD easily and with acceptable quality??

    Cheers

  2. Well Foz,

VCD resolution of 352 x 240 is 100% supported in the DVD standard and I have seen on some DVDs that the special features were encoded at 352 x 240. DVDs support 352 x 240 mpeg-1 @ 29.97fps @ around 1800 kbit/sec with 48000hz audio. VCD will work on DVD-R/+R if your player supports DVD-R/+R.

As for SVCD, in the future it will depend on the player. You do have an alternative though. Instead of making SVCDs you should make CVDs with 48000 hz audio. CVDs are 352 x 480 @ 29.97fps mpeg-2. CVD resolutions are 100% percent supported by the DVD standard and will work in the future on DVD-R/+R if your player supports DVD-R/+R.

I have a really good eye for Digital video and the difference between svcd and cvd is not much at all. What you see as detail on a TV is mainly based on the amount of lines in the image. SVCD and CVD both have 480 lines. If, for example, you had an image that was 480 x 480 and an image that was 640 x 240 (non-interlaced for both), the 480 x 480 one would look sharper.

    Another question is.....

You say VCD is DVD compliant.
Does that mean you can extract the mpeg1 at a later date and burn directly to DVD as mpeg1??

    Cheers

Yes, as long as the Audio Sampling Rate is 48000Hz.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

    Peurtorican....

Can you offer some help on my questions about authoring/burning programs for CVD??
A lot of programs try to reincode if it's not SVCD standard.

    Cheers

Yes, VCDEasy can burn a CVD. Make sure you uncheck the "Perform some MPEG compliance checks" when burning a CVD.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

You could also you Nero to burn. In the New Compilations Tab, select Super Video CD and make sure you uncheck the "Create standard compliant CD" box.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

    It does cheers.

Will changing your template to CBR dramatically lower the quality of the encode?
I was wondering because obviously it's quicker with CBR.
And what resolution do you capture at (to encode to CVD after) for best results?

If I was to extract the mpeg2 later and make a 1/2 DVD-R is there a standard bitrate ??
Or can the 1/2 DVD be any bitrate?

    Cheers

720x480 is the best resolution to capture at. It gives you great detail and is very sharp. :P

You could also capture at 352x480(576) which is a lossless conversion when converting to CVD as you get to keep and convert to the same resolution as before.. :P

  13. Here is my two cents worth. I do cvd with 48khz on the audio side. According to you guys it should be dvd compliant. Well I have found a couple of my friends dvd players that will not play this. Whats up if this is compliant???? 352x480 48khz at 224 audio.

I am trying to capture to CVD at high bitrates.
Then encode to CVD (2520 Bitrate).
Problem is it's going out of synch at high bitrates.

At the moment I can't capture at 720 x 576 which is my preference.
I experience flickering on the screen.

If I use PowerVCR2 to capture to 1/2 DVD size. The problem is it captures audio at 44.1hz.
When I encode using your template will TMPGenc encode the audio to 48hz properly?

WinDVR2 captures at 48hz but I'm not that happy with the quality of it's captures on my system.

I think what they mean is......

If you were to extract the video from the CVD in the future you will be able to author a DVD straight from the video. And put it onto DVD.
Unlike SVCD which would need the video to be extracted then re-encoded.
    I think that's right.
The actual CVD you are making may not be compatible in it's present form in many DVD players. What bitrate are you using? I find that encoding to 2520 CBR is compatible with my DVD player.

    Hope this explains it.
It's only the video file within the CVD that's DVD compliant.

Those more experienced free to correct me.
