i have ntl broadband and i was wondering, when I log off onto the log on screen (i have multiple users), am i still protected from hackers? my firewall only starts up when i log onto a user

It shouldn't be able to let hackers through, because you have not actually selected a user account to work with yet.
Basically, it hasn't actually initiated the windows desktop yet, so the broadband should not be transferring data.
I don't know what will happen if you have one user logged on and then do a swap (leaving the current account logged on, then opening another one without logging off). -
but when I log onto my user, the little network icon in the sys tray says i have been connected longer than I have been logged on.

Your DSL/Cable modem is connected at all times, your router is connected at all times, and when you boot your PC, it configures the connection and obtains an IP address lease and is connected as long as it is on.
The account you are logging on to is simply permissions for you yo use your own settings, home page etc.
That's why they call it "always on".
Your firewall is also always on. If you don't have a router with a hardware firewall, you should consider it if even if you have only 1 PC.
