Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 6.1. what is the ".1" for is there really any audio in that channel? is it put there for emphasis or what?

the .1 is the LFE channel, or the Low Frequency Channel. I carries the bass, and all the sound that goes to your subwoofer, which doesn't require anywhere near the "bandwidth" as the rest of the channels.
it may not be much, but in my opinion, it's one of the most important channels.
