i've just got my hands on the Canopus ADVC-50, and the manual states it can only be used with the supplied cable. obviously this is a bit limiting, because it means i need to get a firewire card with the smaller connection, and most come with just the larger connections. has anyone used a cable other than the supplied one and does it make any difference?

Since I didn't have a firewire card in my XP2000 so I just bought one and using the supplied cable connect from front of the panel (DV) to my firewire card. I guess I can't help you with comparison with different cables, but I doubt it'll make any difference. But this thing works beautifully.
