  1. Hi.
I've bought a standalone dvd-player that supports all sorts of format, but with some of the divX movies I get somewhat blurry image and freezing. The sound carries on as normal thou... Would it be better to try with Xvid instead? Is the quality about the same?
The divX movies are in divX3.11 I belive...

    This is the player:

  3. Divx 3 is old, really old. Use divx 5
    "Terminated!" :firing:

  4. I don't have the same player (mine is the Liteon), but I've been testing this quite a bit and I'm leaning towards Xvid. I've used Divx 5.05 and 5.1 and don't get me wrong, they look quite good, but Xvid looks a little sharper and has less of a 'smeared' pixel effect during dark scenes. Not sure if this applies to all/most Mpeg-4 standalones, but this is my impression with the Liteon at least.

My Xvid results are based on using Umaniac's 17.7.2003 1100 Alpha build with default settings, by the way.

Just do a bios/firmware upgrade and it will work much better. Find the upgrade here: http://www.northq.com/news/news_04.html

By the way, how much did you pay for that unit?

No No, the firmware upgrade is real easy. Download this file: http://www.northq.com/download/EM85xx_MP101CBP2P_244S_20030709.zip

And follow these very SIMPLE instructions. It will then play all of your DIVX file including DIVX3.

    Procedure for updating firmware:
    1) burn the iso file into a disc (burn image)
    2) put the disc into the NQ5000 player.
    3) turn off the power.
    4) push the stop button (on the panel)
    5) keep push the stop button and turn on the player.
    6) hold about 2 sec. then, you can release the stop button.
    7) if everything is alright, you will enter into the update application.
(may need to wait for few seconds)
    8) follow the step shown by the update application.
    9) at the end, the player will eject the disc. Take away the disc.
    10) you can restart the player.

Note: during the system update, the video output is NTSC composite/S-video.
Also, don't remove power during flash memory update.
