Hi Guys just thought i would let u know how i converted some xvids to vcd with good results.
First off al i used virtualdub
Load the xvid select video then select Full proccesing mode click compression select divx 4.12 click configure then set the Output video Bitstream to 1000 and set the key frame interval to 10 frames click ok then go into audio, select Full proccesing mode then go into convertion and select 44100hz hit ok then save as avi.
Once u have ur divx video u can use tmpge to convert to svcd ,vcd or what ever u want.
The reason i convert to divx first is that its far easyer to convert and u hardly lose any quality going from xvid to divx also frameserving gave me shitty results aswell..
As for xvid files that have ac3 5.1 audio im still working on that and if anyone can help me that would be great...
I hope this can help u guys out

Ok, tried everything in VirtualDub that you had in your guide, but when trying to save as .avi, I get the following error
'The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format.'
Under 'file information' within VirtualDub, the audio is listed as 48000Hz, and Chanenls is 2 (Stereo).
Instead of changing the sampling rate to 44100, should I click on 'No change (48000Hz)'??? -
Actually, changing the sampling rate to 48000 doesn't help matters, I get the same error..

those settings worked for me m8 but if they dont work for u theres another way, u can select no audio then save as avi and when thats finished select avi audio again with direct stream copy selected then save as wav file that only takes a coulpe off mins then u can use that as ur audio source in tmpge
It all depends on what codecs u have aswell u should try and get the ace mega codec pack it has every codec u will ever need.

Im glad that I found a thread that is specifically addressing the
"xvid to (s)vcd" issue. I recently downloaded a nice LOTR2 in this format. I am attempting to convert it to svcd. I checked out the guides and saw that the process is not too much different from the one that I use regulary when converting most everything else, using tmpgenc. I extracted the audio, as usual, with vdub - and then after changing a few settings in tmpgenc (2-pass vbr, 4:3 ntsc line, motion search precision HIGH,) I clicked on start and let the program do its thing. Now what I am seeing that I did not expect is that it is taking forever to encode. And looking at the time remaining, I am going to be waiting forever! Did I do something wrong? Yes, I know that 2-pass vbr takes twice as long and all that, but c'mon, 24:34 time remaining. I wake up the next morning and its not done yet? I know that I had to do something wrong!
this xvid is very good quality on my pc. It's like mpeg-2 quality wise. Now if I encode to vcd is it going to keep the same quality? what do people usually use this format for? watching it mostly on computer? the resolution is good for mpeg-2, but it takes up much less space than svcd. It's kinda trippy, I keep expecting it to take hella room up, but its the smallest svcd that I ever made. Is this because the xvid is just smaller to begin with? If that was the case, it seems like no matter how small the first format is, when I encode it to svcd, it is going to be the same as any other svcd. If anyone out there can feel what I am saying (under neath all this confused babbling) drop me a line. In the meantime, I am going to read up on this codec. I hope that this flick I am making comes out cool the first time. I have already read a few horror stories mostly concerning the audio, and thats a whole nother headache for me!
Until next time...
peace!

So many movies in Xvid now....and all that converting to bring over to a friends house to watch them...
I think I am going to break down get a laptop capable of TV out and just bring that along with me from now on -
I agree, there are alot of xvid videos out now! But the quality is very good, and the files are small, so its all good. I have an "el-cheapo" APEX that plays pretty much everything, but everyone does not. So I am that good samaritan that doesn't mind hooking people up if I am capable. As for "too much converting", well the reason that I started fooling with digital video is for fun anyway. Sometimes it gets frustrating, but it is rewarding for the most part.
As for the original topic of this thread:
If anyone out there can give me some tips on the best settings for xvid to vcd conversion, I will send them a free gift!Im' trying to keep the quality...
Peace,

Hi there,
Just use the FourCC changer (comes with the XViD codec), load the XViD code movie and put settings in both screens
on DivX. NO OTHER!!!!
Then click APPLY...and you can encode as ussual!!!!
Works perfect and quality is the same.
Hope this helps.

Um, why are you re-compressing to an old DivX 4.12 codec ?. Also if the audio is AC3 then you need to save it as uncompressed then convert it later, it could be added back, but if the final is going to be a VCD there is no point.
AC3
KingJohns Guide AVI Audio
However, the Xvid works just like any other codec, even though I agree its rubbish, I dont see the point in converting it to something else before using it with TMPGEnc, as it will convert them just like any other codec, so long as there are no problems.

King John, I know that you are skilled at all of this, and since you made the above statement, I was wondering if you could tell me why you think that this is so? I am not challenging your opinion, it's just that I am working with an XVID that is putting me "through it" (if you know what I mean!) I just want to know your reason for why you think XVID is rubbish. I have been stressing for about a week behind converting the XvID of LOTR2 to VCD. For some reason, it keeps crashing TMPGenc. I watched a tiny bit of it that I managed to test out on a vcd, and it looked okay, but there was a noticeable difference in the quality. I thought that maybe it was the settings. Or is it just that in encoding XVID to vcd I am bound to lose quality? I hear so much about XVID being one of the best codecs around, but is this true when you are converting for watching on a standalone player? Anyway, I am still trying to figure out why the hell I can get the movie encoded. If you have any pointers it would help out.
What I haven't tried out is converting to divx 4.12. However the only reason that I havn't done this yet is because thats more work, and I want to find out why my way isn't working first. I haven't been having any audio problems, I guess that is because my file doesn't have AC3.
Thanks for any help that you can offer. Hope that my ideas get through - I tend to digress...
Peace!

Damn, that quoted sentence didn't come out right. Well, you guys know what I mean. Hey what can I say, I am used to using Word...
Next time I try to get fancy with my posts, I promise it will be correct.

you missed the "/" out, you can edit your posts you know
Ah, well I'm not going into a history lesson on codecs, but from what I have read you need to click that image up there ^
