I just installed TMPGENC on a new computer and have been encoding some AVI files to MPG. However, some AVIs won't open for encoding. Am I missing a CODEC to allow this to open? If so, which one should I use. It took a month of Sundays to download this particular file and I'd hate to start over

Use gSpot (found in the Tools section) to tell you what codecs a particular AVI needs. Then download and install this/these (in the worst case you have neither video nor audio codec) codecs.
I agree with King John, that trying Nimo (or any other "one solution for all") codec pack is not recommended, as this may ruin as much as it helps. Better to identify what you need and install only that.
