I installed the drive finally and my computer recognizes it as a CD-ROM drive. If I go to system, it will say it's a Sony DRU-A 500.

Anyway, for the real question. I had MyDVD installed. I already prepared a project that worked on all afternoon with MyDVD. I go to the "BURN" and it says "no drive detected". RecordNow recognized the drive, so, I don't know why an approved software program by Sony does not recognize the drive. I have WinME running on a VIA Tech KZ11 Motherboard. I have never been able to put any DVD-ROM drive in my computer and it recognize it as a DVD-ROM drive. Plus, it always has this one CD-ROM drive listed as "CEQUADRANT" that I can never remove. Anyone have any idea why this drive can't be recognized by MyDVD?

This drive is going back. I did everything Sony told me to do and I did just about every possible thing to my OS. I finally got it to recognize the drive, but the hard drive light comes when you any little thing to this DVD drive. I eject it and the HD light stays on....Ok, what's that all about? Anyways, I finally got MyDVD to recognise it and I started to burn. I used a 2.0 Imation DVD-R ($6.99, but I wasn't going to dive into this thing with a bundle). Well, the disc is now a coaster. MyDVD started doing it's transcoding and everything was fine. I left the room and noticed that the player was stuck and there was an error box. I have uploaded an Apti patch, removed all the unnecessary reg files- this stinks. I guess if I built a completely new system with WinXP, it might help. I really wanted to author some DVDs, but I am unimpressed right now since I lost $7 and 3 days of sleep.

  3. Honestly, this sounds like more of a bios and motherboard problem. Have you attempted to update the bios and motherboard drivers? What motherboard, drivers and OS are you using. Windows can only detect what is reported. So if the bios is not detecting the Sony DRU500a and its detecting it as something else than this is a concern. Further more have you tried going into safemode and making sure you have no other residual cdrom, hard drives and other peripherals listed on the device manager that does not belong their. If your running winxp pro, then windows likes to hide them even though the drivers are loading up. Check MS web page for this.

"Have you attempted to update the bios and motherboard drivers?"

This is exactly what I am thinking the problem is, however, there is nothing I can do about except for buying a completely new system. My motherboard's last BIOS update was in 10/20/2000 which was before DVD-Rs existed, I believe.

  5. I don't know if you need a completely new system. Maybe a new mother board. You can get one of those for $60-$150 depending on what you want. I know FRY's has been running ECS MB with a 1.7 Celleron for $79. It would definately suffice plus it uses either DDR or SDRAM. Chances are you have one or the other. www.outpost.com.
