I have been building my own Linux system and I wanted a *NICE* video player, something that is up to Windows standards. Anyway, I found an excellent player by the name of XINE. It is way better than WMP.
Check out the features:http://xine.sourceforge.net/xine_frame.php?page=features.html (It can even use some Windows codecs!)
Bottom line is that this app kicks ass and deserves to be linked in the Linux bit at the bottom of the 'tools' section - It craps all over videoLAN and Mplayer.
Homepage is http://xine.sourceforge.net/
PS
Its "best" feature, is that it supports aalib, which for those of you who dont know what that is; it is an "ASII Art" library for Linux (also some other platforms). Which means that you can watch video streams made up of pure ASCII characters. Which means that you must be a geek to appreciate the beauty of that...
http://xine.sourceforge.net/xine_frame.php?page=gallery.html - Check out the Dolby Digital screen on the right hand side, half way down. Not very watchable close up, but surprisingly watchable further away from your screen. Also helps if you squint when watching... lol
