because the standard read speed of a dvd-video disc is regarded as 1X or single speed. this is the speed required to play movie from DVD. the data transfer rate at DVD1X is 11megabits per second. the data rate of a standard audio CD is 1.4 megabits per second. therefore 4X dvd burning is 44 megabits a second burning, the equivalent of (roughly) 32X CD burning.
