I was wondering which is a better mpeg4 codec? I know divx is more popular and they even have a standalone dvd/vcd/mp3/wav/divx player now, but I will be using my tv out so it doesn't make a difference. I just want to know which one will produce better results and takes less disc space. Thanx

DIVX players have been out forever...just not the kind of DIVX your thinking of
probably DIVX but xvid is just as good if not better if you know how to use it. better results and less space i would go with xvid.

I know divx players have been out but now there are Divx(MPEG 4 codec) standalone players out.

Personally, I have found a lot of people having problems with XviD, including myself. It is an awefull codec system. Hopefully it will become less troublesome as it becomes more popular. Use DivX, great quality and it works!!!

XViD is a promising codec and does produce great quality when done right, just for me it's not the easiest to setup for encodes. Also, since it's a 'work in progress', at times it can be confusing as to which version one should be using, as well as which is even stable. I personally lean towards making all my encodes with Divx 5.02 Pro; less confusing with only one version around, not to mention it has caused me no trouble playing back files encoded with old Divx versions. Also, I use Gordion Knot for all my Divx conversions and it doesn't support XViD yet...'yet' is the operative word here, but in the meantime GK yields beautiful results via Divx 5.02.
XViD is kind of impressive though, considering the quality it does produce and that it's done by a bunch of guys in their spare time who make no money for their effort. Based on this display of motivation alone, I'm willing to bet on big things from XViD in the near future.

I'm willing to bet people will see sense and stop using it ! -
xvid is better. i got a couple of files and the xvid is better than a divx. it is hard to get started codec wise but it is defintely better.

Depends what you intend to do with your encoded files as to your codec choice.
divx has widespread spuuort but has gone commercial
xvid is public but seems to be less widespread and has stability worries
real & wmf have widespread support and wmf may be on some standalones if MS has its way
The above codecs are mainly for PC viewing
MPEG is widespread and works on DVD players
The choice is yoursPanasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin' -
you may want to try out the new release of divx. 5.03 it now supports interlaced video and nowyou can do as many passes as you want. IMO i find the quality equal to xvid without all the bugs.. i myself being a big xvid fan have to say divx pro 5.03 is very very nice and i will be using it more now. peace

Would synch mostly occur on DVD to DivX, or XviD to DivX?
