(to tell the truth i don't know if this is the right forum for this)
Is there any way i can protect ripped avis against being copied (or at least basic copy protection). cuz i ripped a friend a dvd as a favour, and he turned around and sold it to a bunch of people. It pissed me off. so i've resorted to either findina copy protection to use from now on, charging for copying, or beating the crap out the guy and taking *my money. So if anyone can save me from charging people or making someone hurt, it would be very helpful.

you could try adding dummy data to the end of the avi so that when you burn the disc it fails at the end.. make the avi like 750mb, with the final 50 saying something like "the end"..
although i dont know if it would work with avi files.. works with s/vcd's though... -
