is this a home made computer or something like gateway?
    if its home made:
the big white letters on the motherboard is the model #,a google search should come up with the company name(if not there is a sticker on the last pci slot, which is harder to read, but it has the company name and model #)
    if you didn't know already
if its easier for you can try http://download.com.com/3000-2086-10018691.html
it may tell what computer you have, but dont trust every thing it says.

replaceing a cpu can be hard, meaning getting the heatsink and fan off.

Unlikely. The jump from about 500 Mhz to 933 requires a different type of motherboard (socket not the same).

Not true,PIII Coppermine(500-1000mhz) can be socket 370 or slot 1.
    e-z-e,
the only hold-up would be firmware, check your mo-bo/brand website
for update. If the latest update is dated before 6/2000 it is unlikely it will work.

  7. Bus speed is an issue. Many PCs have mobos with non-changeable bus speeds. The 500MHz would run at 100MHz bus, where the 933MHz would use a 133 bus. IF your mobo can't do 133, you're hosed. Plus, you'll likely need new PC133 memory. Since you're out for the chip and memory, I suggest staying where you are or else going all out & updating the mobo too. For just a little more, you can gain a lot more speed.

  8. my motherboard has changeable speeds i think. once when i was testing memory (it was 32 mb) it made me switch to a lower bus speed. isnt this what ur talking about?

p.s. i have 3 sticks of 128 memory that is pc133 ... doesnt that mean that my bus speed is 133?

  9. No, you can use PC133 memory at 100MHz, just not the other way around.

So, if your mobo has 133 ability, you can PROBABLY use the faster chip. Maybe even faster than that. But the best bet is still find the model and check it on the web.

  10. ok. but when i put that stick of 32 mb in by itself my comp did ask me if i wanted to switch back to 100 bus speed so that leads me to assume that i do have 133 capabilities. is this assumption correct?

  11. Yes it is.If your computer is factory built(i.e.Dell,HP,etc.)then go to their website for a BIOS update,as I said before if the latest update is before 6/2000 then the 933mhz CPU probably won't work, but the only way to know for sure is install it.

  12. actually, i found out that the p3 i wanted to swap processors wasnt 370 socket interfaced.
