  1. I have recently installed a Memorex internal DVD burner on my computer. I am running with an AMD XP2000+ processor with 256 meg DDR. In reading some of the guides on VCD help on ripping a DVD to a DVD-R, it mentions that DVD ripping cannot be done in Win 98. Can anybody tell me why that is and are any ripping methods good for Win 98? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    TC

  2. the problem when running widows 98 is that the operating system can only handle single files of upto 4gb.
if you was to just backup a dvd without re-encoding it will be fine because the maximum size of a vob is 1gb.
    BUT!

because most films now need re-encoding there is a good chance you will end up with a file bigger than 4gb, which 98 doesnt support.

my recommendation is if you are going to do a lot of dvdr then i would change to xp with the ntfs filing system then you can make files as big as you want.

I run Win98 and don't find the 4GB limit to be a significant problem. You can make an m2v file upto 4Gb's,the remaining .37Gb's will contain the audio, system, and other files needed to create the DVD-R.

This is true, but to use a FAT32 file system, you would be sacrificing over 400MB on each DVD-R disk that you burn (4,700,000,000 - 4,294,967,296 - file system overhead). And even 4.7GB usually isn't enough these days.

Convert to a modern operating system - it's almost a necessity for video operations.

Ive done 70+ backups using 98se, the only extra step I need to take is to frame serve the vobs with dvd2avi, instead of stream ripping the m2v file out in one piece for re-encoding. I'm using XP now for video capture, but still boot into 98 for rip/encoding (it works). In my opinion if you are using 98 already, backup dvd's with that OS until you've got it done pat, then think about going to a NTFS system. The link in my sig is a 98 guide
Movie only DVD9 to DVDR guide.
