  2. My dad has a Magnasonic DVD801-4. It officially supports VCDs, but it can also play SVCDs if you use the VCD header trick.

I bet both Magnavox and Panasonic are planning to sue.

  4. Almost 0 info about it on the net...

And like someone else mentioned, it sounds like it belongs with a Panaphonics, Magnetbox, or Sorny.

Seriously, though, it seems to be a Canadian company, and despite the hilarious name, they make relatively good lower-end products. The DVD player also plays DVD+RW, but I haven't had the chance to test other media.

An eight-year old Magnasonic TV still in this house. No problems with it, ever. :P

  5. Hey, hey, I did it! Turns out this baby has the same region-free code as an Oritron. Took me a while to track this down, but apparently both the Magnasonic and the Oritron have the same chip, made by Orient Power Video.

I can select any region I want, but the instrucions say for region-free I have to press the mute button. I don't have a mute button! I'm tempted to just press 0 but one guy said this "locked" up his Oritron (but his statement lacked detail.)

    HTH.

  7. If anyone is still paying attention to this, I found the following codes work on my Magnasonic DVD801-4:

All codes are entered at the main menu. Codes are identical to some Koss and Oritron models, so pay attention to those for updates.

1-5-9 VCD enable, but Magnasonics come VCD enabled by default, so it's pretty useless. Only works if music CD is in the player.
1-6-7 Allows region selection, 1-6, entering zero may give region-free, but I didn't test this.
1-7-8 Allow selecting between 2-channel and 5.1 sound.
7-4-1 Dealer lock; allows the tray to be locked so that DVDs/CDs cannot be inserted/removed.
7-6-0 Displays firmware info and gives the option of firmware update.

Also note, SVCDs made using the header trick will play in this player. Not sure about bitrate limits.
