I have a similar problem. If the avi file looks OK in Vdub then you could always save out the video stream under a different compression i.e div x 3.11 or I find div x 4.12 is ok.
Usually with these files they will have mp3 audio so its best to save out audio as an uncompressed wave. Then use these two files as your video and audio streams respectively.
I understand the Nimo pack of build 8 can cause problems and build 7 is better. I also understand you can higher the directshow priority in environmental settings. This has never worked for me, but the first para has and with the excellent quality from an xvid you can afford to lose a little quality on the resave.
I hope this is of help,

Use ffdshow, and encode the xvid with Panasonic instead......works perfectly for me. It takes a bit longer....... but 99 % accurate.

hi again
where do i find this ffd show, i have only used vdub & tmpeg
to change them to mpeg, divx that is -
Look on this site; at the Tools- area. Or; download at Kazaa or Imesh. The same for the Panasonic Mpeg1 Encoder. Also use Virtualdub Mp3/Antifreeze to scan your Divx/Xvid for bad frames. See the user guides from King John for this.
