I'm looking to get a sub $100 dollar dvd player and was hoping to get some recommedations. I would like to get one that is compatible with dvd-r format so it could play burned dvds in the future. Any recommendations are appreciated. Thanks, Rob

RobDMB,
I have had good success with the Pioneer DV-250. It sells at Wal-Mart for $89. Plays DVD-R, DVD+R/RW. Have not tried DVD-RW.

APEX AD-1500. Plays anything even remotely flat and circular.

the mintek dvd-1600 is the bomb, it is only 57 bucks at Best Buy and it plays all dvd formats (+/- r/rw) it also plays vcd and svcd as well as kodak picture discs. Read the reviews for it on this site.

I'd have to agree with both mpb and axlish, those are both great players.

I checked out the reviews of the Mintek and it sounds nice.. I think I'll get one to try out...
However I have one question / concern.. 2 reviewers reported that is plays CD+G Karaoke cd's fine? However there are rarely ever any DVD players that will play CD+G's.. Also the manufacters FAQ says the unit will only play VCD and DVD karoake and not CD+G.. So do these guys not know the diff. between the formats or do they have some special model that will play CD+G's?

Try the APEX 600AD
It also plays CD+G Karaoke as well as jsut about anything I can throw in the tray! This unit even has Karaoke MIC inputs if you really gotta have the Karaoke feature (or curse in my house).
I have 2 different APEX DVD players and I think I spent $69usd for the most expensive one. Both play everything.Only 3 things are certain in life... Death, Taxes, and SPAM. Of these, only Death seems affordable!

Cyberhome 402 and Cyberhome 500. Best Buy was having a sale on both for like $50, but IIRC they sold out of the 500's and they are backed ordered in most places.
These players play everything (VCD, xVCD, SVCD, xSVCD, DVD-R, DVD-RW) and if you look to the left under hacks there are macrovision/region options as well.
I've got the 500 and really like it (progressive with 5.1 AC out). However, it will not play UDF 1.05 discs, so you have to burn DVD-Rs in UDF 1.02 (which you should do anyway). -
If you want a very nice durable dvd player that can play
almost anything, SAMPO released this player not long
ago, can play mpeg's in scan modes, vob files, etc
mini-dvd vcd svcd dvd-r/rw, they are also known world-
wide, for their macrovision hack, though this one not yet
available, but who knows...

$69-79 at their linked sites -
best buy was giving cyberhome things away last week,
if you bought some dvd's, not a good sign, buddy as a
mintek, real cheap though, apex's dont last too long,
sampo 620 i bought 2 years ago, still going strong, but
wont read r/w's, but will play mpg's without vcd info...
