source file is .mpg why does it freeze or get the unsupporte

okay i download the full movie of akira.mpg from morpheus. it is 138mb not split up into files. I am gonna split it up after i change it to vcd format. here is the problem, the movie works smooth as hell in windows media player, when I start up tmpgenc beta b is freezes after about 2 min, but if I press abort and then cancel i can continue for like 200 frames then it happens again. the newest version of tmpgenc freezes at 10 seconds. i go on 2 try flask, it says unsupported file format, i try the uncompleted vcd conversion and it loads all 2 min perfectly, i thought maybe the file is too big, i can't split it since the .mpg is messed up. If i can watch it how come it won't load in any encoders. please help, I already used the search function and all i got is avi freezing problems, so this maybe a new question. P.S i have made plenty of other vcd movies which leads me to believe this is messed up, even that vcdgear or mpegfixit do not works it makes an invalid file.

okay i just looked at the file properties from inside media player and not just right clicking on the file, it says the video codec is mpeg4 vers 3, that mean divx right well i thought tmpgenc worked with divx, i am updating my media player now with new codecs will that help.
